My list is the following

1. Sony WM-DC2 - the best sounding walkman period. I don't have a DD9 but people who do have told me it is not as agood as the DC2. In my experiences, it outperforms my home deck in pitch stability and clarity. Not bad because it is a dolby-s machine with 3 heads and manual calibration.
2. Sony WM-701C which I don't own but have listened to it. Very clear and detailed.

bunch of panasonics out of which I really like the RQ-SX75 and the SX20. I am currently repairing the SX33 which is good but we'll se. On a side note to all Panny-lovers: The older SX and S series have better heads than the new ones. I have tried and replaced it and noticed more clarity and detail even though the head was vividly used and probably even needed replacement.

The worst I have heard is the Sony WM-EX193. It has mega bass and groove sound system. Has avls switch and that is it. It does not have even autostop for play mode, let alone ffw/rew! Also, no tape selector and no dolby. The frequency range sounds very limited, sound feels artificial, the dynamics is poor and everything seems loosy and shady. Even the volume control introduces cracking and hissing. If it had an fm stereo, it'd be better but like this, it's just terrible.

Actually I had a supertech walkman (really cheap one) which was better. At least it had a tape selctor switch. Out of the cheapest walkmans possible, the best was Aiwa HS-PS141 which I had and it cost me around 15 $US. It would smoke this Sony like nothing.

Get the Sony DC2. Mine is currently being brepaired by Rencgi (thank you very much) and I can't wait to get it back!

Best three head dual capstan deck is Aiwa AD-S950 better then my Nakamichi unit costing twice as much money just alway sounds a little better and more features for the money. When using a good quality type IV tape and Dolby S, the Aiwa AD-S950 Tape Deck really does reproduce a faithful dynamic recording of any CD source with very little background hiss. As far as walkmans the Sony WM-D6C or WM-550c two of the best sounding units ever made, best built will be WM-7 uses three motors and use optical sensor to detected tape leader. As far as the Sony DC2 have Dobly b/c nr, just not a reliable deck has that clutch gear that cracks have one laying around, the gear splits over time even if the unit just sits in the box. Sony design flaw if only they made that gear out of metal.

Yes, and as for decks, the best one I heard was the Pioneer CT-900S which has almost all thge specs of their reference decks. I was going to mention the WM-D6C but I don't really consider it a walkman. It's a recording deck but it does sound slightly better than the DC2 and I tend to believe it has to do with 4AA battery power versus the 2AA in the DC2. I can't really comment on the WM-550C as I don't own one and I never heard it. Considering it has an ex amorphous head and dolby c, it should be good. But autoreverse decks just cannot cope with one-side decks imo.

Aiwa AD-S950 is better have 3 motor transport PC-OCC Amorphous head 20-18,000hz, Anti Modulation Tape Stabilizer, dual-capstan tranport, the Pioneer didn't have is manual level calibration, bias fine tune control. also own that Pioneer CT-900S wasn't really happy with it, that deck didn't like type IV tapes at all, which was the reason I replaced it with the Aiwa. Still have that Pioneer somewhere think it have a bad powersupply, won't turn on, tape still stuck in the transport uses electronic eject.

Well I liked Pioneer a lot. I currently have a Sony TC-K511S. Although a good quality deck imo with good range of features for the price, I won't dispute that there are many superior decks.

WM-7 3 Motors 2 rev and fw for gear drive look at service manual and one for the capstan drive which capstan was belt driven everything else gear best unit at it time.
Sony WM-D6C best recorder ever made as far as walkmans go, if you want better go DAT

And one other to add to list
JVC R7CX Best transport made uses motor for logic control one for capstan drive and one motor for REW or FF and motor to control head, also the hardest unit to fix, took me a whole weekend to change the belt for the capstan drive, have two separate circuit board

Busy listening to my TC-D5M, it really is very good. Not that portable and only just a Walkman in my book (takes batteries / no built-in transformer).
