These little things are engineering marvels. Was troubleshooting a Panasonic RQ-SX3 and decided to take some pics. Some 90's model Panasonics, metal body type, were pretty darn small. Smaller still if you remove the casing.

This picture shows just how small these things are. All you see it the cassette, all working components are right behind. No space is wasted.

This is a top view to show how thin this thing is. The working components are no wider than the cassette.


I really think that had Panasonic made a smaller casing for this, it would have won the prize for smallest walkman. In this picture I'm comparing it to a Sanyo F4.
