CYBERNET PS-101 HELP!!??

rayr0683 - 2010-06-11 08:40

Hello All,
I am awaiting arrival of a Cybernet Mini Concert PS-101 Walkman. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this unit?? If so, how is it?? How are the sonics? How about build quality?? Will it need a belt replacement anytime soon?? According to seller, its in fully operationable order, with TALKLINE working proper as well. I didn't see any Service manual for it online. So, I dont know what size belt it might need, or if its easy to change the belt on this unit. I appreciate any feedback, or advice/opinions on this machine....Thank You, Ray

I'm not familiar with it, but with other like it. If it's what I think it was, DAK sold them about thirty years ago out of its catalogue. It's an early Japanese-made knockoff of the early Sony Walkman models. Quality is probably very good, but it's also very old. The belt will need to be replaced. You can measure the old and buy a new matching one from AVCR. AVCR also has a belt reference. Caps may also start to fail - a problem in the boombox world especially, but also the cassette portable world. The fidelity, however - you may be in luck. Think 45-50db snr and 100-10,000khz response. Basically, terrible but likely as good as a branded unit, and way better than later generics.

Any reason why you invested in a utterly quirky unit?

Hello, and Thanks....

As for why I would get an old unit like this. It's probably mainly due to the memory of it being my first real listen to stereo sound. And as it was, it blew me away. It's kind of a memory you dont forget. It also had a feature that only my first walkman ever had..the HOTLINE. They are extinct in later walkman's. Kind of wanted to have a unit like my first one. That was a Sanyo M4440. Seems very similar. Dont you have to deduct an inch or so for a new belt, due to stretching? Thanks, Ray

Hello,
After your reply to me, I found this Excellent Info. from 1983. Its very accurate to what you said, and also what Ive been told prior, about Cybernet being part of Kyocera, and KLH popular in stereo equipment for years. Here is an article explaining Cybernet, Cost and Build Quality....

If you scroll down further in this article, you will see another article about several walkmans by various manufacturers, showing all the specifications, this is from 1983. Very interesting about the quality, price, and features included at the time. The article is by Art Zuckerman......Ray

Thanks, Ray
