Do not worry, as long as there will be us, collectors and enthusiasts of listening analog analog walkman and portable, the Walkman will never die. The WM-75 in blue is the sports? I have one, you interested?

It's sad to see that the Walkman Era has officially ended in Sony's eyes. That's why we're all here though anyways, to continue to carry the torch. This isn't nearly the end of the Walkman.

Sony Cassette Walkmans are still available.
They are discontinuing them in Japan only at the moment.

Walkmens are the best. F..c MP3 Players,Portable CD Players and the rest !!!!

Sad indeed. But truly this should have happened some 8 years ago when they stopped making anything decent. Honorable quick death is better than a painfully slow plastic walkmans death. RIP Sony Walkman!

Hi, yes I could be...the last one on eBay UK went for about £18 as I remember and was in OK condition. I bid about £13 pounds and thought if I get it great; if not then no harm done.

Was actually the portable CD, CD-mp3, player that slowed walkman sales.

I couldn't agree more.

I wonder if Walkmans will make a comeback after 20 - 30 years like the LP. Or if someone would take advantage of the niche market and produce high quality units as collector items.

The LP never went away. In fact it just keeps getting better (180 gram type etc)

Very true Nak D, vinyl never went away. The fact that most of the record plants closed was a good thing as only the really good ones remained opened, meaning we now have good quality vinyl release 180g, 200g etc.

To me only one thing is killing tape players, the lack of good quality blank cassettes without which we cannot make good quality recordings.

If would be amazing if the likes of TDK, Sony etc start to make quality blanks again so people don’t have to pay silly prices on places like eBay for quality blank cassettes.

The news article is a little misleading. Although i took a massive trip down memory lane when I saw a news article on it, apparently it is only stopping production in Japan. Still to be made in China and sold in US, and other parts of Asia.

Toocool4, yes that would be lovely but TDK I think have moved on. Not sure if it's true but the cheapo FE 90's weren't even made by them, just had the TDK name... shame on them!

Hi All,

I am a freelance writer from the Bay Area working on a story about the discontinuation of the Walkman. I also see that it will continue to be manufactured in China--but I wonder if you collectors know whether there is a marked difference in quality between the Japanese and Chinese produced models.

Any other comments are very welcome.

so which model do you guys reckon is "The Last Samurai"? So far I can only think of this one from 2002, the Sony WM GX788:




not really worthy of the mantel though, looks good but the sound quality flatters to deceive.
