Vintage (1985 / 1986) James Bond Walkman questions?

ics - 2010-12-11 16:44

Hi.

Bond freak here (ww.007jamesbond.dk)
I am researching the walkman that the Necros the henchman in the Bond movie “the living daylight” uses to kill (garrotte) people.

Anybody who can identify the walkman type (look at screen shot) – it is on Necros (man with hat)

Kind regards.

Ian

Welcome to our forum Ian. Your post is not at all a spam. You put it in the right topic also. I am usually quite good at guessing a walkman mfg. and model. With the difficult clarity of the photos it is hard to discern this walkman make. It is definitely a player of the 85/86/87 era somewhat of a lost time for many mfg. were focused more on price than good sound or quality mechanical construction. A lot of plastic in this age.
The blue (appears to be) sticker running cross angled on left upper area was a typical style used by Panasonic , Sanyo and possibly Aiwa. Grundig is a possibility but I have few of them to know model range well. I wish I could be of more help.

On a side note I enjoy the Bond series very much my self. Have every bond movie ever made on DVD. Good to see other people out there enjoy and keep the older bond alive still. I believe this movie was released in 1987. Interesting side note Chrissie Hynde lead singer for the "PRETENDERS" graduated from my High School a year ahead of me. Knew her a little in HS. The song heard over the end credits, "If There Was A Man", was one of two songs performed for the film by Chrissie Hynde, of the Pretenders. The other song, "Where Has Everybody Gone", is heard as source music in the film (from Necros's Walkman).

Here is list of BOND MOVIES that I own.

By the way this walkman is definitely NOT
a SONY WM-F15 as the buttons are small and left justified on a F15 where this players buttons are more right justified and square not the small elongated oval shape of the WM-F15.

Hi John.

Thanks for your replay and welcome… this is indeed an interesting identification..

If we look at the “The living daylight” (released 1987, filmed in 1986) – most of the electronic devises was done by Philips (licences of Bond).. like the key-ring finder, the “Ghetto blaster” etc… so it was very naturally to look at the Philips “walkman” at the time. But looking in Phillips catalogue at the time 1987 there is photos of the “Ghetto blaster” etc, but none of the walkman. In other Bond movies (older) they sometimes used Sony walkman for bad guys like KGB (WM-F5 in “a view to a kill”).. so it would be naturally to look at this brand – however I cant find any who match the photos Another interesting aspect is the headphones. Necros appears to have different headphones depending on the scene – one “in the safe house, kidnapping Koskov” with no tags, and one with tags in the “death of Saunders” scene

Photos here :

Milkman (where we later se the walkman)

(Killing Saunders)

http://www.popcultureattack.com/Images/necros.jpg

The scene are from different sets etc (UK and Vienna), which explains the difference in headphones. But what is also interesting is that since they a different and you really cant tell the brand (perhaps it is Aiwa on the killing Saunders version), the reason could simply be that it was not a Philips model (official)…so we have to look at all the other brands

The HD photos shows a walkman that in many ways looks like the WM-F15 like you write. But but but – we can se that the bottoms is round (which walkman has round bottoms) – the blue sticker is over a black one – that kind of make an arrow (hope you all can see it) – if so would it indicate the way the cassette is running, but then it would be the wrong way (is the walkman up side down – but then what about the bottoms???). I can also see 4 stripes (lines) over the cover (to but in the tape)… most I have seen has 2 ???...on the to silver area there also appears to be some lines…

So bottom line – not a Sony model, and probably not a Philips model….but which brand had round bottoms?? And looked like the one on the photo

I have mailed with Andreas Wisniewski actor who played Necros and he can’t remember the brand of the walkman (that was a bummer)

Nice to hear of other Bond fans (John) – if you like you could join the “prop madness” here:

Hope to hear some suggestion and info… and thanks for all the input and help

Oh yes, and the sticker is a Zorin sticker?

That silly booklet I do not know

ics - 2010-12-14 01:09

Hi WG (and others)…

Here we go:

Playboy – feb 1969, Bond (Lazenby) reads this while waiting for a safe cracker to finish – he reads it at takes it with him (”from here majesty secret service”) (Bond: George Lazenby)

Zorin – sticker (from “A view to a kill”) (Bond: Roger Moore)

3 nippel (kinky) – from “the man with the golden gun” – Scaramanga has a 3 nippel (Bond: Roger Moore)

Parker pen – explosive Q pen from “goldeneye” (Bond: Pierce Brosnan)

Spectacles – from “living daylight” – where Dalton is seen wearing them while looking at KGB boss Puskin (in Tangier) (Bond: Timothy Dalton)
