Walkman Recording Rig

nak.d - 2009-03-19 14:45

Just wondered what other board members use to record their cassettes. I have a Marantz Ki Sig and a Technics RS B605 as a stand alone set up. Just recording OK Computer on a TDK SF 90.

I use a Nakamichi LX-3 and have a Yamaha KX-W282 Duel cassette deck for duplication/backup. Also use a classic DBX model 222 Type II Tape noise reduction system. I have a rare PPA-1 decoding /amplifier unit made for cassette walkmans. Very impressive ability to negate tape hiss without the typical dolby loss of high's/brillance. Downside is on some types of music the "breathing phenomenon" is noticable but can be nearly wiped out with optimum settings on encoding DBX equipment. Excellent site on DBX equipment, history , models, pricing at http://www.vintagedbx.com/ and http://www.dbxpro.com/
ALSO great site for information on Cassette Decks http://www.vintagecassette.com/

Good post.

I use an old rack-mounted pro Denon DN-790R. I inherited it & it appears to excelent recordings. That said, my D6C isn't far off it for overall quality.

i like my old WM-D3 to make recordings and i do alot. i think it was used in an office setting before i bought it on ebay. there still was a tape in it recording a business metting. it's as easy as pie for most recording projects. i like to run a male to male wire from the computer to the recorder and record streamed music. i guess it may be beat by a WM-D6C but i am not complaining at all about the great sound quality. i haven't tried the mic yet but i see no reason it wouldn't just as well if the oppertunity arises.

Here's what I use alot of the time D-150 and a very used and abused D6, works very well.

aa.fussy - 2009-03-21 15:57

I use a Aiwa HS-JS175 for recording cassettes.

jazzrat2000 - 2009-03-21 16:07

I have a mint Aiwa HS-F1 that makes pretty darn good live stereo cassette recordings... if I want better, I use a plug in Sony ECM 909 stereo mike ... I also use a Zoom H2 in live recording situations...

yeah, and check that D6 ! now that`s a gem - only made in 1983, followed by the similar D6-C !

nice and small setup indeed !!!

Yeah the D6 is nice mechanically perfect but not mint some of the lettering has worn off,got it on Ebay a while back BIN £100 but the seller accepted best offer of £60 Smile. You don't see them often so was quite pleased, and it does make very good recordings.

I used to buy stacks of these. Nearly as good as the venerable SA, but so much cheaper. The only real downside was the blue colour of the cassette, compared to the black of the SA.

...to answer the question, I haven't recorded a single tape for years now. Not since I bought a hifi CD recorder.
...& now mp3s are all over everything... mumblemumblemumble... Smile

My SF 90 is Brown! In perfect nick from a car boot. Got a nice Sony HF 90 as well from another car boot at Studley (Biggest by far in the area).

i don't get it.
using cd-players for recording tapes.
i think it's better to use TT.
recording digital, perhaps MD or DAT is a better choice.

yes, still looking for the studer A721.
so i can record from my EMT 950

the reason i would use a cassette player for recording cd-r's is this. i have alot of old bootlegs which are audience recordings from old concerts on those cd-r's. after i get them on tape i can then use my cassette equalizers to improve the sound to my liking. i gues that is rather primative but it works for me on a limited budget.
