Amazon are selling Sony DD drive wheels

ao - 2009-03-25 11:08

Here it is folks, the one you've been waiting for.

Amazon are listing the part you need to fix your cracked DD, DD1, DDii, DC2, DD30, DD33, Boodo Khan, etc, etc drive wheels.

Sony X-3310-931-1 ROTOR ASSY $22 - http://www.amazon.com/Sony-X-3...R-ASSY/dp/B001ID6R0K

Sony X-3578-115-0 REEL CLAW ASSY $7.95 - http://www.amazon.com/Sony-X-3...id=1238003950&sr=1-1

Heres a PDF Service manual for a DD Quartz containing part numbers to check which part you need

http://servicemanuals.electron...te_player/wm_dd3.pdf

jt - 2009-03-25 11:46

I don't see either of these parts referenced specifically in that manual? There are some numbers that come very close, but none match exactly.

Which of the parts available do you think actually contains the drive wheel?

The more I look at the parts in the manual, vs. the part #s and the descriptions thereof... the less I'm thinking either of these are that gear, which shows up as part# X-3578-142-0

Nonetheless, I decided to take the plunge and pick up one of the $7.95 parts labeled Sony X-3578-115-0 REEL CLAW ASSY. Maybe I'll get lucky. After all, the numbers are relatively close to each other and the Svc Manual is for the WM-DDIII, not specifically for the DD or the D3...

HEY! THIS IS MY 1000TH POST!!!!

skippy1969 - 2009-03-25 13:31

Jt,the numbers have probably been superceeded though out the years, that could be why the number don't match exactly. I've seen this happen with Aiwa a lot.
YAY 1000 posts, congrats!!!! Big Grin Cool

johnedward - 2009-03-25 23:26

Your the BEST AO !!!!!!!! Ordered just what you posted....My DC2 works perfect no click... yet but good to be prepared. Have a DD-11 also. Can you tell me if this gear is also what can repair the WM-F5 ?
Boy they KILL you on shipping was $19 USD ouch. Comes from two vendors guess thats why. BTW am in walkman Nirvana...my friend from Germany arrived tonite from there. Over past 3 months had 14 walkmans shipped to his home Germany. Saved a TON on shipping he brought back on plane to USA. Its 2;30 am and am still putting batteries in and testing LOVE THIS PART well and hate too we all know they all wont work but the KLH solo perfect with FM module. Phillips Skymaster , Panasonic RQ J6, and on and on

ao - 2009-03-26 00:58

If possible, can someone clarify what the above two part numbers are actually for. Sorry, I should know this but these numbers don't appear to match up with what we already know.

I favour Skippy's suggestion that the numbers have probably superseded themselves but it would be useful to others if anyone who has recently purchased one could confirm this.

If this is what I think it is, isn't it a bit of a Holy Grail job?

johnedward - 2009-03-26 09:48

HI all, just off phone with partstore tech. AO the gear you quoted is correct for the DC2 and WM-F5. Dont know what others is good but verified you gave right number. Went through 25 models to get belts... dog only could order 10 models all others N/A Frown . REALLY NEED belts for the WM-5 have two that need them.
ps wow my Panasonic RX-1960 takes 4 belts !! they had them all woohoo ...

isolator42.. is right. getting that part out is a job which takes alot of instructions and practice wouldn't hurt. i have a black wm-f5 in the box and it is pure mint. i don't think it had ever been run other than the 2 minutes i ran it before the gear broke and jammed. i can do alot of belts. i could do a tps-l2 standing on my head but taking out and replacing that gear is another story. i tried once and messed up badly. good luck to all who try....

Sony X-3578-115-0 REEL CLAW ASSY $7.95 - http://www.amazon.com/Sony-X-3...id=1238003950&sr=1-1

FYI: That item is the little silver reel that turns the tape hub. Not the gear.... I just wasted $16

Not sure about the other part.

I called the partstore had tech verify the wheel part AO posted IS THE CORRECT CENTER WHEEL FOR A DC2 and WM-F5 since those are only two models I asked him about cant verify other DD models. Once again this is the correct center wheel for at least those two models and most likely many other DD models. Not your fault... I'm a big boy. I knew it was a bit of a crap-shoot. Not only that, my WM-D3 self-repair is still holing up strong. Mine only has a minimal thump, not the resounding clack. You have to put it to your ear to hear it, and it feels like a little heartbeat during operation. All in all, I can live with it the way it is.

Knowing me, I'd break something going into the walkman trying to fix it. Cutting a sliver of plastic and epoxying it in the notch was not too difficult. But, yanking all of that mess out and putting it back together properly.... yowza!

Oh, just checked... the other part appears to be sold out now too, so I don't need to worry about making this mistake again. Smile

Even dark clouds can have silver linings!

JT, PM me your address, I'll mail you one.

i am not going to try it again on a wm-f5 but let me give anyone who tries it the first piece of advice. the tuning knob can be pulled off with steady pressure. the volume knob ,right next to it, needs to have the plastic with the little dots removed with a very small tool and then you will see the screw to remove it under there. if you do as i did and try to force it you will probably break the PCB. as far as all the little plastic things covering the screws all i can say is take a large pin and stick it in there and they will all pop out easily. as far as replacing them ,,they will go back in and stick but each will have the hole in them. mabey some dark epoxy or yellow in the yellow cased ones would fill the hole. pardon me as i now will return to my clicking D3 & F5.

johnedward - 2009-04-19 07:41

Here is center wheel as delivered by thepartstore.
This appears not to be the correct black plastic gear with teeth on outside large wheel edge that cracks. Sadly not part needed for my repair.
Sony X-3310-931-1 ROTOR ASSY $22 plus expensive shipping. It appears this is the drive wheel connected to motor.

it's pretty but not what is needed. i wonder if they are any of the real things floating around ?
