My New Walkman has a minor problem

goth - 2008-11-28 17:01

I bought a Sony Sports WM-F73 at a thrift store today. It cost me about $6. I also found at the same place a very vintage pair of Realistic headphones by Tandy/Radio Shack for $3!
The walkman is nice and clean, obviously well taken care of. The belt clip is there and the little rubber 'caps' that cover the power and headphone jacks are intact.

Well, I bought a fresh package of 7 cassettes.
I brought eveything home and tried to record some songs by Siouxsie and the Banshees on to it with a tape recoder hooked to my computer and when I play the new recorded tape in the walkman, it sounds a little too fast. When I play it in the tape recorder, it sounds fine. I think the walkman is playing too fast. How do I adjust the speed?

ahh there is also the possibility that the deck you taped the satb songs with is working too slowly. this would cause the tape to sound like it was playing back to fast. do you have any other tape to play back to test the speed of the walkman.
i got a nice walkman yesterday. its pretty cool funny cuz the first things i listened to on it was satb and the cure.

Oh I forgot to mention, I tested a
'Huey Lewis and the News' tape in the tape recorder and it sounds okay. It is an original tape. So I thought I'd ust it for a speed test.
The tape recorder is a Yamaha Natural Sound Sterio Cassette Deck K-520

so most likely that walkman needs some help. i mean if the huey lewis and the news tape sounded fast in the walkman then the walkman needs help. post you question in the tech section of the walkman forum. there should be someone there who could shed more light on it than i can.

one more thing how are you powering the walkman. is it with batteries or a adaptor.

Hmm, I am starting to boubt the tape deck.
In either case I hoped there is a pot I could just turn to slow down the action inside.

1. Try a prerecorded tape in your main deck to establish that it's not at fault.
2. If OK then assume the issue is with the Walkman.
3. Clean capstain & pinch roller with alcohol-based cleaner & cotton bud (I use whiskey) & wait for it to dry.
4. If no change then the news is bad. Definately not a motor issue but a problem with the speed regulator on the main IC. It's unlikely that there is an adjustable pot to control this but take a look just in case. This issue can be caused by someone using a 6v adapter instead of the required 3v but doing this usually fries more than the speed reg chip.

Alternatively you could throw it away & buy this one for a few bucks http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-SPORTS-WALKMAN-CASSETTE-AM-FM-...12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Ha, yeah, not the single malt just the cheapo 'cooking' whiskey. The wife usually has a bottle or two stashed away somewhere. In fact she came back from a Women's Institute meeting the other night with a half bottle & a pack of cards in her pocket. Hmmmmm...
