Great article!  There are so many "familiar" sounds that are disappearing from our lives.  Here are some I haven't heard lately:

the sound of static when a TV is tuned to a dead channel
the ringing of a wind-up alarm clock
coins dropped into a pay phone

And what about the "classic" car alarm noise:
