Aiwa HS-RX2005

Greetings all,
I have recently purchased an Aiwa HS-RX2005 walkman cassette player. It is a special gold edition of a HS-RX610 celebrating the opening of the aiwa plant in singapore in 1992. The seller says it was never used. It comes in a lovely gold box with all accesorise.
Does anyone know anything about this model? I think i have purchased a really rare item. Information regarding almost every other aiwa walkman can be found very easily by googling the model number, mostly on asian websites. But i can not find any information on this model. It would be nice to think they were made in the hundreds, rather than thousands. This would make it extremely rare. I am a big fan of aiwa walkmans, and have never heard or seen this model before.
I will post pics of this unit when i receive it.

Yup, I saw this boxed and advertised in eBay Singapore. It had been on there for what seemed like years and being re-listed in perpetuity. I wasn't sure you were interested in it, so said nothing. According to the eBay description and photos, it was for the grand opening of AIWA Electronics Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

I take it you've bought the above item, then?

Yes indeed. That is the one. The only information on googling the model number is the actual ebay auction itself. 60 euro including postage for this one is a bargain. Only it's case is missing, but getting an rx-610 case should not be a problem.

I've been watching that one go down for ages (one of the few walkmans on local ebay!)
I have an RX-610, but was not too impressed by it (internally) so I passed it up...
Does it work though? My RX-610 needs new caps.

Well, I'd be expecting the belts to be dead too. But that is less of a problem than capacitors- of the 3 RX-610 based Aiwas I have all have capacitor problems, And there is really little space for replacements for a couple of them.
What is really interesting about this series is how ffwd/rewind is handled- with a mechanical slider instead of logic controls.

Ahh, the mechanical slider for FFWD and REW. I just had a peruse for a photo of the RX610, and can confirm it uses the same transport as the P50 and PX410 (also the PX310). I have examples of the first two, and they both have bad leaky caps. A second PX410 I have, had ok caps but a mushy belt. You will need to de-solder the solenoid to get at the insides of this one. The PX410 is a good sounding player, but it is not my favorite AIWA. It just seems to lack a certain 'something' I can't quite put my finger on. I suspect the RX2005/RX610 is based on the PX310, but with the radio receiver bolt on.
The good thing is, you won't need to worry about sealed lead acid batteries, as the PX310, PX410, RX610 (and in all likelihood the RX2005 too) uses two AAA batteries.

The P505 is the rest of world model of the P50 Japan only model. Interestingly the P505MKII model does not feature a HX head.

Yes, that is definitely a gooey belt inside. Same problem I had with the PX410 I received. You'll need to de-solder the solenoid in order to get inside to replace the belt.

I replaced the one in my PX410 with one of these http://www.turntableneedles.co...l-82-Inch_p_484.html.

I've just recapped and rebelted an RX628 (RX610/2005).
Some observations:
Head position is fixed. Hyperbolic type.
Logic control (for only 2 buttons!) is driven by solenoid action first before the motor switch is activated. All actions (direction, play, stop) controlled by solenoid timing it seems.
Whoever thought up the mechanical slider idea on a "logic controlled" machine?! It does not auto stop at all! It functions independently of the logic controls. Seems like an afterthought. And on the RX610 series with no window, makes it hard to tell that winding is complete.
Definitely should not a cost issue because all the parts (in terms of value) needed for full logic controls are there (except for photo).
Recapping: 100uf caps are tightly spaced (especially near the volume knob) so I staggered the placement of the replacement caps.
Interesting fact: I have an Aiwa T95 with the same mechanism but with manual radio with no LCD. Uses the same board as the RX610 series! Explains the need for a mechanical direction arrows: for models with no LCD.

I have changed the belt on this unit. I got the belt from the link plop supplied. Cheers plop. The belt went in easy without the need for de-soldering, i just slid the belt in. The transport works fine, but it squeels like a pig. No sound from the music at all, just load howling.
plop - 2011-07-19 10:59
Caps are gone.
bub - 2011-07-19 11:42
Loud howling from the transport/headphones or both?
And yes likely the Surface mounted caps for the audio are dead, and likely has leaked all over the board.

Yup, it's most likely the capacitors. You can follow plop's Capacitor replacement guide for the PX-410 which has a similar board.
for my RX628 I used:
3x 100uf 6.3V Chemicon (really tight spacing!)
4x 220uf 4v Nichicon (you can also use 6.3v 220uf Chemicons like in plops thread).
I left the through hole caps alone as they were still good. After replacement the RX628 sounds like new (although its not as pretty looking as yours).

I would not have the skills to tackle it. I would ask dottor walkman, but he is very busy at present. He is also repairing another aiwa for me at the moment. Maybe one of you guys can fix it for me? You both seem very accomplished at repairing these aiwas. Either way i will keep this one. Although i like to have fully functioning units.
