Can anyone tell me what the SP denotes in the model name? I have seen mdr-e832LP headphones for sale. Is the difference with the plug?

I own quite a few Sony earbuds, bought from both European and Asian online sellers. As far as I am aware, the suffixes are (were):

LP: 1.2 m cord, L-shaped plug, minijack (3.5mm);

SP: 0.4 m cord (40cm), short plug suitable for remotes, minijack (3.5mm);

SL: this suffix is equivalent to SP. It replaced the SP denomination from 1999 or 2000 onwards.

MP: 0.4m cord (40cm), short plug suitable for remotes, Sony Micro-Plug.

No longer manufactured.

As a standalone product, the SP variants of Sony earbuds are (were) available only to Asian markets. In Europe they were commonly found in walkman packages. The same applied to MP variants. Therefore, these short cord variants (either SP or MP) were made available to European customers only as spares. The 40cm cord was meant to be used with remotes.

The remotes cord length was 80 cm, therefore: 80cm (remote cord) +40cm (SP earbuds cord) = 1.2 meters = LP length.

As far as I know, all Sony earbuds sold in Europe are LP.

I attach pictures of the two variants of the MDR-E888s that I own, SP and LP.
