I am a sucker for those mid-80s AIWAs and early-mid 80s SONY's.

A friend asked me "why do you have so many walkmans that don't work?". "They make me happy, and it's a goal to fix 'em". And it's sentimental.

This is hard but from my collection at the moment it would have to be...

1/ Sony WM-7

My WM-7's will always be top, but the 4 below will change, these are the ones I'm enjoying listening to regularly at the moment.

Ahh, genius.  Great, great post, bout time we had one of these.

My list...

1.  Sony WM-2   - When I think of a walkman I think of the WM-2 with it's battery case and orange foams.  A design impossible to beat and that's in 1982, top that.

2. Sanyo M-G2  - Clever, affordable, unconventional, Sanyo reinventing the wheel at a time when everyone else copied Sony.  Oh, and she was my first.

3. Aiwa HS-J08  - The height of Aiwa exotica, stupidly over engineered, sound quality took a back seat as Aiwa stuffed this box with gadgets and style.

4. Sony WM-11 - Yeah, groan, but the first affordable walkamn.  £22 bought you a portable stereo with better sound quality than any £500 home stereo. 

5. Sanyo M5550  -  Pure and simple, no compromise form Sanyo.  Great sound too

This is my current top 5

1. AIWA HS-PX505

AIWA's black 90s monolith full logic slide BBE player. I find this such a versatile and enjoyable unit that I pick it up time and time again to listen with.

2. Sony WM-D6C

Sony's super reliable recorder. Accurate and dependable enough that I use it to make all my mix tapes now.

3. AIWA HS-PC202

This not so little player is inconspicious and basic in its features, but packs an amp louder than most AIWA and a superbly transparent sound.

4. AIWA HS-PX303

I love the design language on this player. It looks and feels good. Bass is its forté, and boasts 4 different ways to show it.

5. AIWA HS-RL50

This model never really made it outside of Japan, but it has a place here on my list. It is no real looker, but is fusion of many things AIWA did well before its sad decline.

A special mention a for the AIWA HS-JX929. It doesn't make my top 5 list, but does get the prize for having the most functionally crammed into it.

My top five is here is that i have them.

1) Aiwa HS G09 - This is such a beauty and a beast when it comes to power

2) Sony WM DD9 - Not a fan of DD series but i have to admit this does sound good even 

          though not loud in comparison to above.

3) Sony WM 30 - Such a cute little unit and the fact it is pink always raise eyebrows

4) Aiwa HS PX20 - Not keen on these black Aiwas but this Dolby B+C unit does pack a

          brilliant warm sound

5) Sharp JC M50/Panasonic RX HD10 double cassette recorder- (Sharp) It may not be 

          everyones cup of tea but a superb well built sounding unit./

          (Panasonic) unique item is enough to say.

Apart from the top two as others can subject to change.

Top five i had or i wish i had:

1) Aiwa HS G08

2) Sony F107 white

3) Sanyo FF4 i think

4) Sony WM D6C

5) Sharp JC TV1 i think

Yes that is correct as i have one in black. Mint condition but sadly does not work as no power can get through. I did have a white one years ago a and was the talk of school hehe.

the favorites that i  own and use are both am/fm recording models

sony wm-f200 & wm- f200 mark 2

some favorites that i used to own were early edition sonys

with real extendable metal antennas-

so much better for fm reception

Mine list is massively skewed by stuff I've owned & I'm no real walkman expert. Still, here goes...

1. Aiwa HS-PX101 - 1987 saw Aiwa finally topple Sony's crown for sound quality. Or so What HiFi magazine thought. I went shopping, tried 'em both & agreed. So did my brother and at least 2 other people I knew. Still use the headphones daily.

2. Sony WM-60 - mid-level Sony that looked more expensive than it was. Lots of metal in the transport & lots of toys: auto reverse, 5 band eq, dolby, 2 phones sockets, etc. Used so much, I actually wore it out completely.

3. Sony WM-DD9 - made at a time when Sony still did things "because they could". Wonderfully engineered & out performed many hifi tape decks, forget about boomboxes 

4. Sony WM-D6C - A home HiFi tape deck in your pocket, & a damn good one at that. No more need be said, really.

5. Sony SEQ-50 - cheating as it's an add-on 5 band eq. However, it's worthy due to the fact that it can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. i.e. it makes it possible for me to listen to an iPod.

Honorable mention: Sony WM-DC2 - for so very nearly being better than the No.1 Aiwa, up there. If it had ANY tone controls, I suspect the result would've been different.

Aggreed Very Nice Pic - Never had, heard a DC2 !?  Closest I have is a WM-5 

May be looking for a DC-2

However, I'd like to mention also some players I like so much, for it's sound quality or design:

- AIWA PX303: superb bass

- AIWA JX2000: amazing golden player. 

- AIWA J08: super featured and miles ahead from other brands alternatives at the time.

- AIWA P02 MKIII: Marty's Back to the future player

- SONY WM-107 solar player.

- SONY WM-7: the first auto-reverse.

- WM-20: the first really small player.

- WM-701C: what to say about this very well known player?

- DD9: superb player.

- D6C: Superb recorder.

- WM-2: the grandfather of the DD line.

  WM-WE01: A very special and stilysh player with wireless earphones.

Hi all, just came across your site, looking for info on my Toshiba kt 4085, which I have had from new and is still in good working knick. The only pic. I can find is an add in the Washington post circa 1985. I do not know enough about the different walkmans to have a top 5, but am wondering if anyone has one of these and what they think of it. I notice it hasn't made anyone's top 5 but I guess its at the top of mine. A friend of mine had a sony double tape, back in the day, that was a bit of kit.

3  Sanyo JJ-P101 great design and first logic control walkman I owned 

4. Sony DC-2, great sounding walkman, one of the best in my opinion

5. Aiwa  HS-JX859 great recorder overall, got me thru school

Now this list I like.  Do you still have your M-G2?

Still do, works great, just really liked the design, they put the tuner on the side and it's curve shape, wasn't design to look like a Sony was different and built to last.
