Sony WM EX1 HG
claret.badger - 2012-02-27 01:12
Are these units any good?
Are they useless without their original headphones?
Do they have normal headphone jacks?
Are they highly polished POS or are they decent sounding playback machines? (and I mean compared to the DD line of decks as well)
talk to me
radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 01:58
sombody just paid over 100 quid for one of those...yess the seller haz another
i used to like the dd9 but not now...contrary to belife they use 2 belts....the whole thing for me was that the dd9 was not supposed to use belts...utter bull

Hi Claret,
I have one but is non working. I think it's almost the same than a WM-702: small and thin factor and decent sound, but with so much wow&flutter. Not comparable to a good DD.
The real problem of the remote is that I think it's the only place where the megabass/sound switch is, so without them you can activate or deactivate. It will remain in the same position where it was the last time used.
The headphone jack is compatible, but only with its own unit you could use all options.

just got my silver walkman
missed out on a "broken one" with headphones and all the bits I didn't get with this one - although that on went for 50 quid more than I paid for this
first impressions - without the bass circuit - as this is on the missing remote - so I am playing this through my Senny HD25's is:
"frickin A" - this sounds nice, this LOOKS nice
the eject has nice "motion"
fairly stable for a non DD unit
it's in fantastic non scratched condition
I DO NOT NEED TO START COLLECTING WALKMANS!
pics later

DD9 is Sony best, as it uses two servo motors to drive the transport, so has the least wow and flutter and built very well. Yes it uses two small belts, but one for each motor, it not like it use two belts on one motor. You are not going to fine one with a better transport or frequency response, or two motor design. Yes the other DD's are louder, but doesn't sound as good as the DD9 due to the dd9 can pickup a wider range of frequencies, compared to the others.
It like saying a cheap home dual auto reverse cassette deck that use one motor to drive both wells, will sound better then a highend three head single well with, close loop dual capston and two motors...That utter bull!!
claret.badger - 2012-03-07 07:18
I just had a walk and listened to a tape I made 16 years ago at uni
this thing sound surprisingly good
Not in the DC2 or D6c range - but darn close
this is a thing of beauty - and may stay in the badger stable of walkmen
Do I need and EX2 HG?
DD9's are off the radar - as they go north of 150 everytime now
I got all my other DD's off the bay before the madness set in

*opens bag of malteasers*
What's your opinion on the Sony show ponies AO?
ao - 2012-03-07 08:14
To throw a grenade of contention into the discussion I have to declare that in my most humble opinion these are too new to qualify as retro. The WM EX1 is from 93 which is far, far beyond my spectrum of what constitutes as a collectable classic. It doesn't mean to say they aren't collectable & I'm sure they have their supporters but go upstairs and show the boombox boys a well-specced Egg from 93 and they'll probably laugh you all the way home.
Again, just my opinion and by no means an attempt to throw the topic.
claret.badger - 2012-03-07 08:26
AO - acknowledged
but you gotta think outside the box now
boomboxes and walkmans from (our/their) goldenyears are either old hat or too expensive.
there is other audio gems out there that have past their mainstream sell by date - but to us sufferers of OCD/ADD and any other acronym they MUST be collected whilst prices and media do not reflect their true (mainstream) worth.
in my head, in my head
all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,

I agree 100% but I know what I like and won't stray beyond that, it's an age thing I guess. But you also need to consider that beyond the golden age saw the advance of technology and the decline of quality.

Why don't you get the DD9 fixed, if you have two? Pretty sure you can get one fixed out of the two, or the other 8 walkmans. I only charge most people $40 bucks to fix them if it's a simple problem like a belt, pinch roller, or cleaning and around $75-100 if it needs SMD rework and complete restoration, which is worst case. You have a good walkman that will work for years after repairs and don't have to screw around with trying to find a working one on eBay, that will more likely fail shortly if no work was ever done to it anyways. I might even be willing to work a deal as far as a trade go, if you don't have the funds. Do have working one up for sale already fixed, but you will be better off with getting your DD9 fixed and enjoying it. The newer one, just don't care to much for them, like the ones from the 80's better, DD9 is the only one I like out of the full logic ones, out of Sony.
claret.badger - 2012-03-07 09:13
don't diss or dismiss
I have no love for these walkmans - but then when you hold one of these silver f**kers in your hand
and then realise - without the bloated bass circuit (oh god do I HATE sonys Megabass) - they sound good too.
It's right that we collect what we deem collectable
I don't consider myself a walkman/boombox collector
I just have a "few" I like - and some that I have found cheap
bub - 2012-03-07 17:53
Sony EX 1 series are very easy to service and provide good performance. Downside is that the amps are rather weak. Actually one of the last higher quality Sony machines imo.
The case design is very well done and rather unique (For the EX1) compared to the other rather generic machines that came later. The mini disc style eject is a feature unique to this series. Sound quality seems to be much better than later logic controlled sony machines. Also very reliable, only belts and pinch rollers to worry about.
I would consider them collectible, especially as an anniversary model, but it is obviously not as desirable as the DD9, and most earlier 80s models.
EX-5 looks very nice with the mirror finish, while EX1,2,3 seem nearly identical.

Long story short..i sent both of my dd9 to sony....what a horendus mistake.....these would cost major £££$$$$ to restore as one of them has damaged traces alsorts...and the other isn't much better.....i have seen your ads on ebay.....wish i could afford to have them fixed....both you and another kind member have offered to fix them....maybee one day bro
