Import Duty

minty - 2012-06-17 05:57

Hi all. Can anyone fill me in on import duty on items from America? Is the duty payable at the same rate for vintage items? Can it be paid in instalments? Or will revenue accept an agreed price? I've purchased an item from America, but didn't know duty was payable on second hand items. Ain't really got the cash to cough up for duty.

Duty is dependent on the destination country. So in the case of yourself, then I would suggest going to your country's customs website for further information.

Been there. Not much help. I'm hoping I can negotiate a price with them. Damn tax. I'm sick paying tax.

You wouldn't believe the tax we are paying over here. Tax PRSI pension levy health levy. 1/3 of my wages goes in stoppages. You purchase something that you save long and hard for, and they want more tax. The government are tax hungry over here. You see the leader of our country? Enda Kenny? As we would say over here, a gobshite!

Duty is always payable on certain items being imported to a country irrespective of its condition. For example if you brought a 3 year old Japanese import car into the country you would not expect to pay duty?

You may of course not pay the full amount of duty since the car is not new, as duty is relative to the value of the item you are bringing into the country. Therefore it is up to you to prove the value of the item to customs and for customs to be satisfied that the documentation supporting your declaration is valid.

There is a schedule set by the EU for the duty rate % for items imported into the EU.

In addition, you may also have to add VAT that is applicable in your country at the time of importation.

You shouldn't have to pay duty on second hand items. It's ridiculous. We are talking about a cassette player that is over twenty years old.

The annoying thing is, all this tax is being used to pay back greedy banks who lent recklessly over the years. The money is not being spent on public projects. That's what really annoys me.

Relax....

For a walkman it is 0% duty in the EU. You only need to pay the VAT applicable in your country plus any shipper's fees for collecting the VAT for the government.

Even then, if you do not exceed certain limits, you may not even need to pay VAT.

i once paid tax, it was an item from the swiss. but from the usa, never paid tax. just send the item as a gift. it's stupid to pay for 2nd hand items.
