Let's see your boxed walkmans

This post is actually a walkman fair of granduer that I cannot miss.
Here is part of my collection, 80%, give or take. the original attachment is a high-defination, over 10 million pixels picture. I do not know whether friends here can
download it. if you can, you can see the name of every walkman here clearly.
it takes too much time to put all my walkman in order. I will make time totake more pictures to share with friends here.
Oh christ, what's the point? <throws pencil over shoulder>

Michael I knew when you posted your collection (which I believe you only collect BOXED mint condition Walkman) we all must bow to your fervent passion showed in the most extraordinary Boxed collection of all collectors I know. Like AgentOrange said.. "Toss pencil over shoulder" we give up.... The honor is yours. Truly you are the "KING OF SONY" the ambassador into the future keeping Sony's 80/90's sound technology alive , new and working !!
We all look forward to when you have time to add some individual photos of the single boxed examples and Walkman for us all to enjoy. Hats off to a Grand new member.
Side Note: when posting photos to the forum it reduces them to 100 kb thus we are not able to zoom in to see model #'s on boxes.

Ah yes lately S2G been overrun with BBX enthusiasm.... time to Show our support and passion on the Walkman side. Nak that Fergy is so clean and the box wow just love when a box looks brand new and so hard to find such anymore.
Sadly no my EX20 although complete with all accessories and box is not the serial numbered version. It is mint though. I too agree that the appearance is most elegant, the feel of it in the hand is pure class and luxury and the solid like a rock weight and build is awesome to have in ones hand. Sadly to me the sonic excellence of this player lets it down although it is a very good sounding unit the high frequency performance for me is slightly lacking and the surround sound technology although innovative causes distortion of what you hear if player is turned up to any volume. I have had two (sold one) and both exhibited these traits. Am unsure if this is true statement of all EX20's.
I know you have a mind altering 5 of these all boxed. I doubt if anyone else in world even has 2 boxed examples. You truly have a thirsty passion for these little mechanical electrical marvels of engineering.

HUGO you truly have the most RARE selection of the most collectable desirable Walkman anyone could want to own. And so many of your boxes are in such amazingly great condition. I know the time you have spent to find such treasures and it shows. I have to
bow to your breathtaking boxed collection. The Toshiba mini boomer with detachable Walkman is very rare and to find in a near perfect box too. Your DC2 box well speechless , true class all the way.
What I have in quantity you have in quality.
Thank you John. Your praise to my collection make me proud.
I don't focus specially in boxed units, but when appears one very interesting I try to not loose the opportunity.
I focus on Dolby C, top-class or beautiful designed walkmans. Also a few rare or special edition.
One of the few boxed walkmans I'd like to have is the DD9, the AIWAs PX101, PX303 and PX505, but they are extremely rare and expensive.
BTW: I also have a D6C and a WM-EX20 boxed, both near mint, but still don't have photos.

Excellent collection Demiwang, all boxed and mint or new. You have probably the biggest boxed collection of SONY units in the world!
As John said, there's a size limitation when uploading photos. A simple and easy way to avoid it is to upload the photo inside a ZIP file, so we can download and view it at full size.
Keep sharing photos... ;-)

It really is great that so many of these boxed packages have survived, a real credit to you all.

Although the understated DD boxes are clearly nice, the Sony Soundabout designs (i've seen two maybe three types) are the best for me. How often do you see such fantastic creations where the item in question is a design element, not the star, and it still works?

I have a few more, haven't even really started on AIWA's yet, as they are getting their own thread with a history leason, revisions changes, or common issue repair behind them. Just have to find time to dig out of boxes and take pictures, my favorites are the 80's ones, not shown offen working, as seen 701's or DD series done a million times already.
Figure cover a few unique interesting ones instead and maybe PCDP and DAT players/recorders some more coming later this week. Just haven't taken pictures let, as never shown. Some are going to be saved for weeks to months to come, as going to be feature in other threads and videos first and don't want to let the cat out of the bag yet!

Sorry for the hijack
Oh wow, that is a cracker. The humble WM-100 format has never looked so nice. Amidst a sea of boxed DD9s & D6C's this just stands out. What's the story behind this?
Hi Chris,
I purchased this Blue 101 in a department store in downtown Paris, before my flight back to Toronto in '87.
I had a few cassettes in my bag (gifts) but no player so I headed down to Le Printemps (sorry if spelling is off). They had the black and red ones, but only 1 blue one left so I snagged it.
I listened to it on the plane ride home and after arriving I put away in a drawer because a new format caught my eye. The CD. I never really listened to it after that..it only has about 20 hours of use on it.
I still have the bill of sale and manual....

Retrodos, you have not only have a beautiful collection, you have the ability to fix them and keep them functioning...that is worth it's weight in gold!

Nice story, as far as the blue 101. The minidisc is what did it for me, not the best sound when compare to CD, but for the go was fine. Then HI-MD came around and change that of course for the better, then made even DAT obsolete, due to DAT reliability problem. Had to buy the early MD when they came out, just really like the size with LCD stick remote and they were well builted.
To bad Sony found a way to effectively kills MD format, due to many copyright protection limitations, which later they remove, but was to late. Do like it replacement the SSR "Solid State Recorder" 96khz 24bit in your pocket with lower noise floor and long record times, plus very reliable, no more have to deal with DAT recorders breaking down every couple years and if outdoors sooner. One of the very few pieces of technology that improved over the years.

John, I am really overwhelmed by your larvish compliment. "King of SONY" reminds me of Michael Jackson, "King of POP". It is a title too big for me. ^_^
Recently, my collections keep growing as I found a lot of rare units, like wood boxed EX808HG, red velvet boxed WM-3EX, etc. Some of them are still in my friends hands who help me buy them. I am expecting their arrival.

You have some nice units their. I did notice you have 2-4 of the same units? Did you get them from a retail store, or someone who own one or clearance out?
I believe, as a keen walkman collector, you are buying opportunities, not only items. So if I have a chance to obtain the rare walkman I have loved, I would not let the chance go away. I would not hesitate to buy the second, the third one, or more. I do not worry there are too many of them.
Redundancy guarantees a sense of security. yet another one serves as a provision against unexpected damage, loss. sometimes, they are also a chance to swap for another walkman I do not have. collectors might not sell their collections, but might exchange them for other walkman they like.
And more importantly, some walkmans boast their assorted color versions. Like WM-DD has six colors, WM-EX1, HG included, has 5 colors, WM-EX7 has 4 colors.... My rule is to collect as many color versions of them as possible. Perfection means all colors of them.
some walkmans have a lot of editions all around the world, unlike WE01 which was only sold in Japan, and there are slight differences between different editions. For instance, I have 5 boxed TPS-L2, two are the early J1 edition without walkman logo on the body, one is sound-about version, yet another one is later version with walkman logo on the body, and a boys and girls printed on its box, J1 edition, and the last one is also later version, but US edition.
This diversity is also the case to my EX808HG. Paper boxed Japan edition, paper boxed US edition, wood boxed European edition...
colorful walkman....
The last question, where i got them. none of them comes easy. perhaps, each unit of my collection has a story behind it. But there is no walkman store nowadays. so i cannot just walk into a store and buy them. Collectors are always like scavengers, keep rooting around. But we love it. I remember a scholor once said "it brings more pleasure to pick up a pearl in an ash can than seeing a larger one in a jeweler's windows." That's it.
PS: regarding walkman stores, I have a story. 9 years ago, I was planning to buy several headphones in a walkman store. but unfortunately, my wallet got stollen on the road to that store. it was a huge loss of money, and even worse, I lost my ID, all bank cards, even my school library card. I did not sensed any wrong until I walked into the walkman store and found my wallet missing. right there, I was almost on the brink of going desperate. Then, the boss of that walkman store, very kind gentleman, helped to call the police to me and kindly gave a few bulks so that I could buy a bus ticket back to my university and a supper. I reallly appreciated that boss and I still do now.

One thing digital tech bought us that I can say is much better is "SD recorders". Now you can get 192khz 24bit PCM recordings, lower noise pre-amps, with around 50hrs battery life, that can fit in your pocket. DAT good sounding, but was nothing but a pain in the rear and expensive. To start transport was too fragile and would fail regularly, heads didn't have long life span and portables unit use smaller head, which had a few issues and didn't last as long. Battery life sucked 4hrs is not much when needed for major project. Alot of tapes stock were garbage, had quite a few that became sticky.
The only two portables units that were really good is Tascam DA-P1, great pre-amps and unit easy to service and reliable. Sony TCD-D10 pro, or pro II, used same transport as a Sony dtc-1000es and full size head, only problem is finding one that works. I personally won't use one for a serious project anymore, as SD recorders are much cheaper to run, better pre-amps and more reliable. DAT and minidisc make for a good collectible piece of history.
One on the bottom Sony TCD-D10 pro, cost $2600 back in it's day. Now a Sony PCM-M10 can be had for $249.99, is also much better overall.

Decide to redo all older pictures, so took old pictures down for now. It coming with quite a few others, but with much better pictures, as camera use back then was crap and no comparison to newer pictures and have four 701's now guess what color, exclude sterling silver and black?
