Nice collection, retrodos. I like the Sharp MD from first generations and DATs specially.

Rather nice HD-S1 DAT recorder there. What does the Strasser name refer to?

The name was AIWA professional series, or highend of products. Like the name Technics was Panasonic highend branding. One interesting fact about this recorder is the A/D block being based on Technics's MASH circuit and the D/A on Philips's Bitstream.

Staggering collection and fascinating stories too. Thank you.
I see you included a CD player (which is something I have not seen discussed on here before) and it is one of my favourites; the D-EJ1000 but I wonder if you ever had a listen to the older (and more humble) D-E705? I had one years ago and was absolutely blown away by the sound quality. The 1000 comes close but sounds a bit hard compared to the sublime 705 which comes up on ebay occasionally for a fiver!
Why do CD players seem so unpopular? They are flawed technically but still massively better than MP3!!

Some of the older Sony PCDP's do sound different and in some ways prefer over the D-EJ1000. The reason CD player's are unpopular is because DAC's improve over the years and sound better as can process more. Unlike cassette decks, or walkman's where manufacturers built them better back in the 80's, then CD's became mainstream and manufacturers look to cut costs. Plus digital pretty much the same on any format weither it's DAT, reel to reel, DCC, CD, or DAP. It doesn't really matter what media it's on, but more rely's on how good the internal DAC's and how the music was recorded and level of compression.
As far as MP3 player's, their are some DAP's that can play up to 192khz 24bit files and have good DAC's. The more you sample the better the audio quailty going to be after reconstruction, as far as CD's only are capable of 44.1khz sample rate, so music not sample offen and detail is lost, plus with digital you have to look at jitter. Granted CD is way better then compress MP3 format, or earlier Sony's atracĀ® format. Just wish SACD became more mainstream.
