Grundig Beat Boy 120 arrived today :D
gearwheel - 2013-01-25 06:27
here is one of my two new babies .. just arrived - it was a tip i read here, from walkgirl, who described it as the loudest one (together with that fair mate) and tried to get one...
Grundig Beat Boy 120 ..
and with Grundig Earphones +yay+ .. i`ve got two of it, which came in the packet. and they still work.
just opened. shows a beautifl metal ground....
so ... whats the point, buying an old cheapo cassette player like this ? well, it doesn`t make any sense to me, collecting all the cool cassettes but without seeing them at work. so lets see, how it may look with a clear plastic door :
the great super metal master, not hidden anymore :
one of sony`s "walkman" cassettes :
even not bad with a reel :
and tinted ? f*ck YEAH ! :
some classic red/blue combination ?
or completely blue ? YES ... that water blue makes it a "beachboy" :
so, i`m happy for now ... sadly, there are some things, that comes with 30 yrs. old electronics .. one of the two headphone jackets seem to be dead on the left ear, and its a wobbling and jerky sound, think it needs new belts asap... i`ll fix it this evening ...
but, i`m praying, that this second channel is fixable by soldering and the belt is no problem, i`ve got a sack of generic belts here ...
so ... the second one is still on travel, hope, it arrives tomorrow ...

That is a neat one!
I remember them from about 1984 in the store in the showcase!!, the red blue and golden ones
And I see you have the original headphones!, how do they sound??
walkgirl - 2013-01-25 06:57
It was not that cheap in 1984!, about Fl 129,- or about DM 119,-!!!
a cheapo would be about 59,- or 69,-!!

i took a walk to the hifi store (happy to have still one, which isn`t wiped away by discounters), beatboy runs fine, but theres a very little background noise like ... mmh it sound like a metallic squeese, when you search a station on a tuner... its not permanently there and only a weak sound, but i hope, i can fix it or find someone who can..
ok, at the store, the shopkeeper recommended the porta pro for my walkman, and here it is :
fits PERFECTLY, doesn`t it ? ^_^ ...
and he told me, that they recommended the porta since the 80s for every new portable walkman, because of the crappy original headphones, which were always in the box. and that`s, how the original headphones are : craptacular ! ...
we just smalltalked a while, and he asked, if i`m in need for walkmen, etc ... hell, YES ! .. so he grabbed around the table, and showed me a used DD2 ... and that he has maybe more stuff .. "old treasures", so i took his card and will phone him in a week ...
119 € ? oh, rly ? ... ok .. i just remind to the old 1989 "beatboy 140", that i had ... and THAT was a really bad quality .. and cheapo ...

congrats to you .. it`s really hard to find that model, in whatever colour .. do you have some photos from the silver one ?
the point is: i didn`t know porta pro a week ago .... and i read, that headphone hasn`t really change since 1984 ..
that maked it the perfect match ...
i love that classics, that doesn`t change and keep their style.....

A real classic find and I like this player a lot for its age performs very well and loud. Have two pairs of PortaPros and for daily use bike riding , walking, commuting nothing even comes close especially the bass for the money they cost. They are shy on the high end though.
Putting new belts on this model is really easy. I have the red model. The blue looks great. I have the Beat Boy 100, 120 and 130. Have to dig up the photos as they do really look grand showing off the full cassette tape.

I wasn't too familiar with the Grundig Beat Boy series. I think it looks great, nicely made and thought out.
gearwheel - 2013-01-25 16:21
i saw pictures of the red one, its also a beauty ^_^ ...
generally they`re hard to find. i searched a lot for this player, but no way... i can understand, why walkgirl seached so long for it.
yes, i am listening atm to this great earphones, and i fall in love with this bargain hardware. its really great, i love electronic music in different styles and this koss is doing its job very well ..
and its a perfect device, if you are a walkman AND tape collector, thats right ... i cant`t remember the name, but there was a sony walkman, and it also had a clear plastic door .... maybe this is easier to get, because its sony...

well, it has only a plastic body, thats not the same quality like the old sony DDs... but the buttons are metal and clunky, even the carrying pins, and the brushed-look metal, which looks like a sticker with the "stereo beat boy 120" text on it, seems to be thin metal, which is glued to the plastic door .. thats okay for me .. its not a tank, but it already survived 30 yrs. ...
/edit : still listening to music .. well... the squeaking noise has been disappeared o.O ... think, its only hearable with earbuds..

kingrat2010 - 2013-01-27 02:01
no walkgirl, thats my fiancee, my little boy and my little toys
kin - 2013-01-27 08:47
Got a silver and red one. Actually I'm a Sony man, but I was deeply attracted to the clear front lid design, finished with an elegant steelbrushed strip and logo.
gearwheel - 2013-01-27 13:12
oooh .. beautiful *.* ....
i fall in love with that silver one ....
/edit : the beatboys have no autostop, right ? mine doesn`t stop...

I agree. We never saw many of those in Canada, but they look rock solid!
gearwheel - 2013-01-29 07:03
hehe, think, walkgirl has a silver one in good condition now ...
gearwheel - 2013-01-30 13:27
this is the sony with clear door .. but i only found a guy who wanted to sell for 100 $, which is silly imho ... -.- ..
gearwheel - 2013-02-03 17:05
there`s another beatboy 120 at the bay now, but for silly money :
that guy tried it 2 weeks ago with 33 € as start... he writes : until no bid on it, trade able for direct buying. i sent him a request about 20 € ..... never answered xD ...
that ppl. always start their overpriced auctions, when there are "auction weeks" for 0 $ auction fee -.- ...
i hate such behaviour...
