stells92 - 2013-01-29 09:31

Does anyone know whether the first ever Sony lettore Mp3 sport has any value or uniqueness for collectors?

the thing is too many people come here asking about the value of things as if it's all that matters.

this is a site for avid collectors, enthusiasts, if your curious of it's value then throw it on epay!

Hey stells this device you are asking info about is not unique !

It doesnt have a collecting value either .

Something similar was sold yesterday for the price of 40 dollars

you can have a look here :

Oh Welcome aboard !

stells92 - 2013-01-29 13:55

I didn't mean value as in money value. Probably should have stated that. My brother is a Walkman enthusiast and trying to find a unique gift for him.

There are a lot of walkman enthusiasts here!

I m sure someone will see your post and direct you at the right choice

for uniqueness !

Hi Stells,

If your brother is a walkman collector, then he probably knows that almost every MP3 player SONY made was a piece of cr***. Frankly, SONY did many things better than MP3.

Their insistence in forcing the user to use their ATRAC codec rather than the MP3 make their players one of the most hated.

If his interest are in old MP3, go for interesting ones, like the first one (Diamon Rio PMP300, very rare), the smallest one (the MobiBlu i-cube), the first with HDD (like the Creative Jukebox 6GB) or the best Cowon if you're looking for best audio performance. Avoid the original iPod; their price is crazy after S.Jobs died.

But if you look for a good cassette Walkman, then that's another story...

Hugo, you're a top chap and your tireless work on your personal website and posts here are great. But respectfully I beg to differ regards (recent) Sony MP3 players. The early ones did suffer from such arsery as Sonic (Chronic) Stage and of course their ATRAC buffoonery. However the X series and even the S series sound great with a decent set of cans. Cowan and Colorfly would most likely beat them in a few areas, if talking in absoloute terms. But saying every MP3 player by Sony is bad surely is not right. I agree with everything else

Hi there W.A.is right better off for something in a more quality department as there is much better out there for your brother,When listining to mp3 audio nothing in my opinion beat's my Cowon a3 60gb this to is in the older catagory, this thing pretty much does it all in my opinion anyway, i'll post the pic so you have an idea of what may be a better suited player

Thanks Nak.

You're probably right. My mistake. I don't know recent sony players, as I have completely lost interest in their digital players, so I don't know their X or S series. I was mainly focusing in early players, as stells92 asked for.

I have to admit that when SONY wanted to make an extraordinary device in terms of sound quality, they simply did. So if they really wanted to make a good MP3, I'm sure they did.

But I admit also that I got carried away a bit with rage I took against their earlier mp3s because they tried many times in their history to force the user do things like they wanted. All that story of Sonic stage angered many people (mee too). But people aren't stupid and they talked (stopped buying sony players). I was also upsetting by this, even that I didn't bought them any of those music player! (yeah, I know that it has not a lot of sense but...)

As reference, apart from ATRAC, they also released Memorystick card and bit by bit, 27 different variants of it, making a crazy system of cards. In the end, SD and CF cards won.

They also released many many storage formats, totally incompatible with others, and 99% of them failed. Elcaset, discs from PSP, many pro video tapes and formats... Only video Beta and Minidisc (I think I don't forget any) got any sucess.

They also were totally against internet and the fact that the user can connect to it. They refused for many years to let the user do things in the www. Even today they avoid including many options (related to connectivity) that others do. They seem to marry forever with phisical formats.

so maybe that's why I went too far saying that...

No worries Hugo, I know what you meant You make some very valid points regards formats and options etc...

Thumbs up for the Sony X-series from me. I have a NWZ-X1060 since 2009 and I love the SQ. The earlier Atrac models ( and I have a couple) were a pain to use. Their only future value should be to remind Sony on how they made a mess of an historically brilliant brand.  Recently Sony have joined the masses by producing MP3 players that also make the bed and start the car. My honest opinion is that if Sony went back to making devices that simply play excellent music ( and market them as so ) they would do themselves a huge favor in the long-term..............but what do I know????
