Same..yet different

brutus442 - 2013-04-04 07:12

Does anyone here have same manufacturer models that sport minor differences? I'm not talking about AKA's but the same make and model#?

This is Sony's WM-101....Do you think these changes were based on consumer feedback or internal designers?

stg2

Thoughts on why they did this? Seems expensive to change production for a very minor issues..

pawel - 2013-04-04 07:39

Mine wm 101 has the dolby sign but has no knob on the lid,
so I guess minor changes took place quite often.
Next models based on the wm101 has the knob on the lid,
so I think it was direct consumer feedback, because the knob makes
it much easier to open (despite the fact that costs more in production)

Makes sense Pawel. It does make it easier to open. I sure Sony had a lot riding on their Walkman line-up and didn't want to lose too many people to other brands.

But why the Dolby logo? marketing?? Everybody and their mother had the Dolby logo emblazened across their wares in the 80's. Did they need to advertise the fact?

depends on market I think was series

check serial numbers first 3 of them is answer

That's possible. The serial numbers are vastly different  33,000 to 424,000 so I see that could be a progressive change. I wonder how many different regional versions of these there are..

maxim - 2013-04-04 08:52

model production period of time for 101 was 2 years

so maybe some local markets got more differences

ao - 2013-04-04 08:57

How interesting.  I know something about the 2nd difference.  One of them, not sure which had a clasp affixed by 2x tiny screws or studs, these often detached themselves thus preventing the door from ever closing securely again so i assume the changes were to eradicate this issue.

What is the 1st difference exactly, the pic isn't clear.  Is it just the red text?  if so, what does it say?

True. Quite a few boxes and walkmans do sport slighly different names but Sony has done this in the past with it's F100 series walkman. Why not a WM 101 II

The new and improved!

brutus442 - 2013-04-04 09:09

dolby system

Correct. Any thoughts Chris?

I know there was WM-100ii, not sure why the Dolby-equipped version isn't called this.  What does it say on the label?  Same for both?

pawel - 2013-04-04 09:34

This DOLBY sign could also be a legal issue.
According to licence every unit (no matter portable or not) that has a dolby chip on board has to have a dolby sign and a written description. most often the Dolby D sign is on the front and precise description is on the back of the unit, but i.e. sony wm505 has both on the front.

Can you show us the back of the unit without the red dolby logo on the lid ?
Than we can speculate was it a design or a production flaw.
Anyway you have a unique specimen.

brutus442 - 2013-04-04 09:37

I'll have to get back to both of you with a picture of the back. I have a doctors appointment I've forgotten about

Will post a few pics later...thanks for all the info gents!

The one on the left is the model without the Dolby logo on the front. Doesn't look any different at all?

ao - 2013-04-05 06:58

That is interesting

pawel - 2013-04-05 07:02

IMHO it was either a production flaw - i.e. someone called Tokugawa simply forgot to paint the Dolby logo, or other guy form the design office forgot to place it in the project - then of course committed seppuku and someone else ordered to throw out the whole production to the sea. Only one unit was saved by an anonymous ninja that was diving near by, and here it is - you have the only one unit in the known uniwerse, that has no Dolby sign on it.
