Good player and you have both colors too in beautiful condition it appears.  So often Aiwas have cap leakage affecting performance.  Your lucky if yours work perfectly.

Haha, thx for your reply. Both of them are working quite perfectly. However, it's a pity that I missed a beautiful white PL50 in CHN's BBS.  I'd like to show you a pic White_PL50this is it that I didn't have the fate to own.
btw, I haven't met the problem you said but the problem of it's mechanical module. It has been fixed well by a famous person of walkman-repairing in CHN. His name is Master Zheng

Wow, cool enough. very similar with balck one. It is dark green. I just wondered how many colors of PL50 will be?

walkman.archive - 2013-05-09 01:23

Plop, that's a nice unit. I didn't know there exist a green variant. Looks very dark, almost like dark grey, huh?

Thanks WA, it's the green PL50 I've been going on about for ages, but never got round to snapping until Rain_man finally nagged me into it.

Yes it is a dark metallic green colour. Quite hard to photograph the colour accurately which meant I had to bring out the DSLR to photo it.

em, do I mistake it? A well-boxed PX50 has finished auction is not yours?

It is not mine. I regularly spot interesting items on eBay and post links here for others should they not notice them.

A S2G member did however buy it though.

I agree with you that the PL50 is a very nice player, indeed. I also have the silver and recently, the black version, but not the white or green.

I have my silver one totally restored and it sounds great.

However, as far as I know, it was released together with the JX505, J505 and PX505 in 1990-91 and shares with all them both the DSL and BBE.

I'm not sure about the exact dates, but I'm sure that any serious collector here can give us info. I'm pretty sure that in 1989 the models available were the '3' and not the '5' series: JX303, J303, PX303 and PL303.

I never saw the plastic case; interesting. But the second case you show actually pertains to a JX2000 or JX3000 (the golden models), not to the PL50.

Keep adding your series! It's very interesting.

I would have to agree with you. The PL50 models would have been a later release. Most likely around mid/late 1990 at the time of the other '5' series alpha transport models.

The earliest '5' series alpha models released were the F50, JX50 series and JL50. All three of these models share a similar design style and also importantly the bi-azimuth mechanism that was to be later phased out in the other '5' series models released (PX50, PL50, RL50). Similarly the later three '5' series models all share similar design styles as well. Most noticeably the variable control BBE and lack of bi-azimuth mechanism.

The JX50 series was popular enough to have been produced in such great numbers that over time it too evolved to no longer have the bi-azimuth mechanism as well.

I never saw the plastic case; interesting. But the second case you show actually pertains to a JX2000 or JX3000 (the golden models), not to the PL50.

The plastic wallet would have come from a PL505 (worldwide release unit). Japanese AIWA (except for the gold boxed units) typically have the vinyl pouches. I have the plastic wallet too, and it came with the black PL505 from UK.

The second case does seem to have been scavenged from a gold boxed model such as the EX50 or JX2000.

That's a very nice walkman. Do you know his sucessor, the J700? It has some improvements, like radio with 3 presets and the hybrid transport (part mechanic, part logic) but lacks recording and one less band of the EQ:

AIWA Walkman HS-J700 01

If you want also the recording function and DSL, you may take a look at the JX303, a very beautiful walkman, but very rare too:

AIWA Walkman HS-JX303 03

The JX303 was the top-of-the-range model back in 1989. Then you have his sucessor, the JX505:

AIWA Walkman HS-JX505 01

which has also BBE as well as DSL and all the features present in the JX303. First generations, as Plop explained, have the desirable bi-azimuth while latest ones not.

But WA you are mistaken, the J700 (aka J101) does feature recording. Even the writing on the face on the J700 above says 'stereo radio cassette recorder'. In fact, the 'J' type AIWA models are all recorders.

Thanks for your details for my topic. To the best of my knowledge, it was released in 1989. However I will make sure whether it is right. I will update the info about this walkman as long as I got the accurate answer.

I dun know how to describe the sound of JX50/JX505. It is really amazing, and the sound of radio and tape of it are in a high level.

Thanks for the point, Plop. You're absolutely right. That mistake happened often when someone has two or three things in mind while writing... And I was doing that

(in fact I'm doing it again, while I'm looking at our incredible Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari )

I don't have better info than my catalogues, but often they don't show clearly dates or just the year.

I looked at my '89 general AIWA catalogue and I found the '3' series. I don't have the '90 but in the '91 I found the '5' series.

However, it could happen that AIWA released their models some months before in the asian market and then in the rest of the world.

Oh, I didn't understand your "dun" in a previous post. Now I see: 'dun' = 'don't' ;-)

Well, I didn't compare them directly, as they share many common features: transport, head, DSL, BBE...

But they differ in few points:

 PL50JX505
DSLone-stepOne-step
BBE VariableTwo-steps
Azimuth FixedFixed (earlier units have bi-azimuth)
HeadHX AmorphousHX Amorphous

Somaybe the JX505 is slighty better if you have a bi-azimuth and know how to preperly adjust it, so you may get even better highs...

I have two JX505 (one with bi-azimuth), one JX50 (with 'bi' too) and three JX2000 (I think one with 'bi' too) and they sound pretty well. I have three of them fully restored (belts, caps, leaking...).
