Sony Walkman WM 10

richard70 - 2013-07-26 15:03

Hi all....

Just joined this site after looking at some old pictures on the internet of some old personal stereos that were out at the time I was still in school! Always wanted a nice Sony Walkman but never had one! Had some old cheap copy of one with the orange sponge headphones... I still have a load of old cassettes in the original cases they came in. So after looking around I've fallen in love with the WM10 and the WM20. Can anyone tell me how good they are and would they be able to give me some advise on looking for one?

Many thanks!!!!

Welcome to the forum Richard. The WM-10 and WM-20 are excellent little walkmans. Very reliable. Most just need a replacement belt, which is very simple on these models. They are wonders of miniaturisation, and sound pretty good also. Try ebay USA. They come up for sale quite regularly there.

Thanks Minty....

It's a brilliant site....Brings back a lot of good old memories looking at some of the pictures up loaded on here. I've been trawling all the Ebay sites and have found a few, some working and others that I imagine only require a new drive belt. I'm looking for the best one I can get! May take a bit of time but I'll find one I hope! Do you have one of them? Quite interested in knowing the build quality of then?

I don't have one at the moment, but have owned a couple. They are well put together. All steel casing. Great no nonsense mechanism. They won't work unless headphones are connected, which is why many are listed as non working.

I'm defiantly going to get one in the near future! Will be a good one I hope! Have loads of old cassettes from my school days hanging around the house but nothing to play them on! Do you know of any other makes that are also close to the size of the WM10?

Hi Richard, welcome to S2Go!

You can also try the WM101, WMf100 series. Both built off the same mechanicals

Thank's Brutus!

Looks like I've gone full circle! Digital music around the house has something missing from it! Even though I'm playing the music that I own on cassette! I never had records as a child...just tapes for some reason? Trouble is....I've also been looking through all the threads on here and want a ghetto blaster again! I can still remember my first (sort) of one! It was a Hitachi of some description. Had it around 1982-85! So looks like I'll be looking for two different tape machines lol

Yes Welcome to you new obsession ;-)   You may want to look at the WM-40 or WM-10RV ( US version) they are totally over engineered and built like a tank vs. the WM- 10 and less so the WM-20/30 are a bit fragile.  The WM-40 is much more money to find a working one but they are really built well and sound very good.  Step up in quality and VERY SMALL is the WM-701C that even has dolby C. Have to be careful make sure if you find a 701C that is comes with the headphone jack adapter so you can use standard headphones ( the 701C came with Sony's unique plug that only worked with mini plug earbuds ( crappy idea by sony ).  Enjoy

Panasonic makes some really great players also that hold up excellent.  Belt replacement is always something you pretty much plan on ( newer smaller models can be tougher as you have to desolder PCB board to get to belt).

Showing player closed ( same design idea as WM-10/20 series but notice the door opens reverse of the WM-10.  This model was the highest design best engineering highest quality of the compacting WM-10 concept.

Yes the WM-40 Japanese release model ONLY could come with a AM/FM radio tuner cassette module VERY VERY rare to find which is what mine is. The WM-10RV is just a cassette player.  Here is link to Topic on the FM tuner Sony models I did.

Thanks for the welcome John......

This is now getting out of control for me!!! Been looking at the D6C and DD9. I can see this becoming expensive! The D6C sounds great to me at the moment! I like the idea of being able to record with it.. Would you or anyone for that matter know how good the quality would be if I recorded a CD onto a Metal tape using Dolby C? Any help is gratefully received!
