Has anyone on here ever bought anything from Yahoo Japan Auctions? If so how did it go, or is it a large risk?
Thanks
Bryan

Brilliant marty. I would recommend it. The standard of packing is superb. Just make sure. If you join, when you bid, you must have enough deposit. It`s all explained on www.japamart.com. Good luck.

Just a word of warning, be prepared to pay a very large shipping fee, about $250 US for a 30 pound radio.

The postage, is the main problem. I got 2 boxes (eggs), for £33. Shipping, was, £120. The commision charges, are very reasonable IMHO. It`s up to you, but, i would certainly use this service again.

I can't speak to walkman related stuff on Yahoo, but as a general service it's very reliable. I've used it several times to buy Video Game stuff and they've always arrived in condition exactly as described. Consolidation fees and shipping will bring an order up to be fairly pricy, but if you balance that out by buying a few things as opposed to one or two, it ends up being pretty decent for what you get. That said, stuff in general is a bit pricier to ship to New Zealand, so your results may vary! I use a forwarding service called Buyee, and have yet to have any issues.
As for attempting to understand things, I don't really have any advice I could give you. I'm studying Japanese so that knowledge greatly comes in handy here.

I've won a few auctions on Yahoo Japan via Noppin.com for all kinds of stuff, but if you're not careful, the shipping cost can be a bitch (pardon my french). The trade-off is that the shipping (EMS) is VERY fast. I just recently got two Japanese AIWA walkman models from there and for relatively inexpensive cost. They were the HS-JX929 (Japanese version of the 707 with AM Stereo Capability) and the Japan only JS-450, which looks like this:

Both in perfect working condition with only slight scratches that are barely noticeable along with most or all of the accessories. All in all, if you want some rare models of Walkmans you can really find some nice ones there. I recommend it too. All you need is the right Auction deputy service and there's a few out there. Noppin is the one I use and it's reliable every time.
