Anyone know if they made a Sony Walkman with stereo AM? I have the EX1, EX5 without FM/AM tuner wondering if they made FX version of the same guy with AM stereo?
i have a wm-fx1 which has both am and fm. i didn't get any info with it so i am not sure if the am is really just mono or mabey stereo. it sound like stereo to me though.
Hello DrMR2000,
I don't think any Sony Walkman with AM radio capability supports AM stereo. I guess because AM radio didn't develop much further after most went to adopt FM modulation which is far less susceptible to distortion for the signal strength (amplitude) is not modified for transmission. Anyway, most AM broadcasts nowadays are mono (at least where I live).
Doing a little search around, I see that the AM standard didn't even settle properly to set out a proper industry standard AM stereo system.
I think Sony themselves considered FM much more important, for their "first" radio model WM-F1 doesn't have AM capability, nor does the early WM-R2. I really doubt they are AM stereo capable, after all they went to the trouble of fitting in a bulky ferrite bar antenna in those walkmans just for the AM! Technically, a stereo AM radio probably would be simpler than FM stereo radio but that just wasn't the trend of the time?
Then again, I could be wrong.
Hi,
not sure about the stereo on AM but i do have the FX1 and FX2 which has a world tuner and the FX5 are hard to find.
I think they were made for the South east Asia market.

I know "AM Stereo" was quite popular in Japan.
