Sony WM-40 service manual & help wanted

fortexg - 2009-10-01 14:24

I finally received the WM-40 I won recently and it is exactly as
described - with missing battery door latch & non working on battery.
Being aware of those facts, I still chose to bid due to the unit's
rareness.

The unit does give a buzzing sound when powered by AC adapter, no
motor movement is heard. Buzzing sound is also heard on headphones - might be noise from AC adapter?
I am optimistic and hope the only problem is a jammed belt (battery issue might just be a broken wire - they are very thin). Smile

I need to take it apart but very much like to have the service manual
before attempting this. Being unable yet to see the innards, I was
astonished at the mechanical complexity of this unit's cassette door/
expansion mechanism alone. There are mechanical interlocks, which prevent
the cassette door opening before the unit is fully extended &
retraction if the cassette door is not fully closed

My unit is different than others I've seen on images - it does not
have the pressed "Walkman" lettering on the bottom and it has the 6
contacts for the radio module in the cassette bay - assuming CPT-1A
FM/AM module will fit?

Also I need to find the belt (docp once listed size as: 0.8 x 76 mm, renzgi: 0,6 x 80 mm).
Guess DocP is the source - or perhaps PartStore?
They list the belt and battery lid panel assembly X-3321-255-1.

They do have a lot of parts for WM-10RV - same as WM-40, right?

jammed belt

Sound like a jammed belt which is the reason why you don't heard the motor, could be also dry up capacitors try the radio and see if you get that buzzing sound, also try different adaptor, if it is the capacitors it will cost about $150 to get it fix if you sent it to a good shop, but is worth fixing it that is one rare model.

Unfortunately I do not have the radio unit, so can not try.

This being a post WM-10 & small unit, the circuit must be all SMD, with ceramic & multilayer capacitors, not many electrolitics (which can dry up) I suppose - but then again, one in a critical path is enough...

Would sure appreciate a service manual scan...

Surface mount capacitors do go bad not that offen, you will then need the service manual for circuit schematics to get the values had to replaced the ones in my Sony discman D-555 do have the seamless soldering equipment, sometimes if it just one you can get away with using a fine soldering tip and some flux.

But think it just a jam belt or bad dc servo motor or DC servo control IC my WM-10 has that problem luckly had another one for parts. As far as a service manaul that maybe a hard one to find, that model is a very rare one the only service manauls I have are for WM-10 and WM-30

i don't know much about that wm-40. it may be the one i passed up not to far back on ebay as i was thinking it would be beyond my knowledge. i can tell you one thing for sure as far as the wm-10 and similar models. a jammed belt is about 75% the cause of the motor stoppage in those models. broken belts have been nil. the belts seem to just stretch till they pop out of place.

You are right about wm 10 RV being the same as wm40 . I can send you a xerox copy of the manual and a spare belt if you want to give things a try

The WM-40 service manual is very hard to come by-found no results for it on Google for instance.

Guys I have a perfect condition WM-10RV (US Version), WM-40 service manual. Will try scanning this weekend.

aa.fussy - 2009-10-02 16:34

Could you upload it to a site like Mediafire or post the scanned images here?

That would be great.

johnedward - 2009-10-07 10:57

Scanner down, took high res. 6 megapixel shots should be able to enlarge and see clearly. Take me while to upload all here are first few pages.

Thanks JohnEdward (& others). Sorry for my late reply, I had absolutely zero time in the last couple of months - and this is not going to change for a while, so the WM-40 will have to wait...
