Me again with yet another problem

I just got a 701C with the mail this morning. Perfect boxed condition with accessories...

Unfortunately, it won't play. What happens is when I press play, the wheels spin for two or three seconds, then just stop - there's no sound coming out of the phones while it's doing that. Tried with different power sources, different tapes, cleaned everything, etc. to no avail.

FF and RW work just fine so I don't think it's a mechanical problem.

If that sounds familiar to any of you, please let me know. I don't want to disassemble the unit before I know my options...

Etheir Bad relay control ciruit or it the transport which is a mechanical problem or bad belt, but don't think it's a belt because rew and ff works and all logic still works.

Looks like I have to open it up then...that's really annoying cause it's such a great unit.

What was the fault?

I'm not sure what the problem was, but it wasn't an electronic one. Took it apart, cleaned it, greased the gears and pulled a few screws tight and voila it worked...me like
