I was wondering if anybody has any tips on disassembly of the WM-101 (or WM-102, which appears to be identical?).

I just got one in working condition, but inside, there's a brightwork piece on the bottom of the compartment (the capstans poke through two holes in this chrome piece), and somehow the edge of this closest to one of the reels has gotten bent up. It still works, but when you insert a cassette and latch it closed, the latch and lid assembly are having to "fight" this bent piece of trim to stay closed. I think I can straighten it out well enough - but I can see I'm going to have to pull the thing to pieces in order to manipulate it in the way I need to.

Eh, I got impatient and sorted it out There doesn't seem to be any practical way to get to that particular piece without totally taking apart the mechanical assembly. But I got it sorted well enough that I'm happy.

Sorry we couldn't help you here buddy, seems that this challenge has evaded us up till now. Would have been good to see some pics of your endeavors.

I'm probably going to open it up again this evening, and will take some pictures - the belt seems to be in good condition with good tension, but I think it may be twisted a bit, and when I had it apart yesterday I didn't inspect that aspect of it very closely. Playback sounds a little warbly, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that's the only problem.

Here's my Sony WM-101, ready to be disassembled. You will need very small Philips head screwdrivers (I have a set, Stanley #66-0552, that's just right).



(1)Remove the volume control and flexible washer by unscrewing the center trim counterclockwise. You can use tweezers for this task, but be sure they're suitable for the job, otherwise you'll tear up the chrome finish. This is a ChanneLock tool you can get at Home Depot (about $22). Look for "snap ring pliers". It has interchangeable tips. (2)Remove 1 screw near the volume control and 1 screw near the label.



(3)Remove 4 screws underneath the battery housing.



(4)Lift the lid strut assembly away from unit as shown by the arrows.



(5)Remove 1 screw adjacent to the headphone jack. *This screw is a special size and fits only in this location. The front cover can now be lifted away (there is no screw at the opposite end of the cover).



(6)Remove 2 screws at either side of the rear hinge (obviously you'll have already removed the lid at this point - this photo was taken out of order). *These screws are a special size and fit only in this location.



(7)Gently prise up the bottom cover of the unit, starting at the end nearest the battery housing. Continue to raise this end of the cover until the opposite end clears the switches and headphone jack, and then lift the cover away.



(8)The innards of the WM-101. The lower arrow indicates a pin* I used to aid installation of the belt (I don't know whether that's what it's there for or not, but it helped!). Install the belt around all the lower pulleys and the pin, then as the last step, stretch the belt around the motor pulley. The upper right arrow points to the pitch control, the label of which is hidden under the flexible PCB.

*Upon reflection, my guess is that the pin's main purpose is to support the back panel of the metal outer case so that it can't flex and touch the moving pulleys. It's far too sturdy to simply be an assembly aid.

is the belt the typical .7mm thick square one that sony used alot of in the mid. 1980's...thanks

Hi rerooted, I've never seen any others to compare with, but that size sounds about right, and it is square as you describe. Even after fiddling with the belt, I still get playback that's a little warbly. I'd like to try a new belt, but I don't know a source for these, they're NLA at partstore.com and Sony.

you can try turntableneedles.com but it takes alot of practice to get the size correct. if you go to the website go to the part that says not for the faint of heart. there is no shipping charge and the cassette belts run 3-4 dollars each. practice till you get it close to correct. almost all are square cut. one big problem is getting a belt that is too fat. i think they will warble a bit even if you get the size correct. belt are the biggest problem for me. doc p has been alot of help but he hasn't posted lately but try and pm him. parts store still has a few belts but they are terribly expensive and they are very low on stock. that is the only place i know to get a proper belt for the wm-10 and a few others that take the same tiny belt. nothing will ruin a good repair job like a bad belt.

just glancing at your picture it looks like you used a 1mm belt. just a guess i would say the .7mm would be better but don't hold me to that.

Regarding the disassembly; if you only need to access the belt, it suffices to remove the volume control and the four screws holding the bottom half of the case. The lid does not need to come off for this.

(Sadly mine has a broken capstan and probably a dying belt as well, so repair seems implausible without another one of these for spares, but at least I got to explore the mechanisms of this Walkman quite extensively.)

wouldn't it be great if we could just type the model number into a company that carries all the belts and then for a few dollars and a few days the belt would arrive in the mail. the belts are inexpensive to produce and somebody could make a hefty markup. personally i would be jumping for joy if someone would provide this service. right now i could use about 20 belts to fix ones i am running with the wrong belt. it would be so much better without the warble from a belt that is 2 loose.

I have bought belts on ebay USA for both a wm-3, and wm-701s. Both belts fitted perfectly. This guy sells japanese belts. You just tell him the model of your unit, and he sends them out. He sells various belts to fit most sony units. Sony never actually made belts themselves, they had them made for them. Anyway, the name of the ebay shop is Marrs communication. I would recommend them.

I also have bought belts from Marrs for cassette decks. I will be buying belts from him soon for my WM-D6C. He is an honorable seller.

where is he located ? is it possible to order by phone. i am going to check the internet and see what i come up with. thanks very much. mabey i can get some music from these oldies.

i typed marrs communications it said this seller "THIS SELLER NO LONGER HAS ANY ITEMS FOR SALE" so many belts i need and no place to get what i need. i have about 40 new belts right now but they are not the sizes i need. i guess i clean up shop till i can find a source to get the belts for repairs. thanks anyway....
