Panasonic SX series technical specs

plop - 2010-09-12 09:35

I clearly am quite bored these days, as when I am bored I end up doing stuff related to Walkman. Having a dig around the internet I have been able to find a comprehensive list of virtually all the models in this series from Panasonic themselves.

Interesting to note that the earlier models had louder amplifiers and much better playback frequency response.

As per Eingang's request I've added some more info. Unfortunately the data in it's original form is dispersed across a number Japanese embedded flash files. Photos of each model listed below from the website are further down.

Sorry it's an image, as I am not sure how to format the columns in this forum correctly. If anyone wants it as a text file so that they can sort it in a spreadsheet PM me.

There is SX99F with tuner + record ...

plop - 2010-09-12 09:57

Indeed. There is also a SX75V, but the site I went to only has the information posted above.

Nice over view! But like we all know, specs don't mean much without tolerances.

plop - 2010-09-12 11:57

True, and that I do agree that tolerances come into play as it is unlikely that no two identical models will perform exactly the same. These are the manufacturer's own data as found buried deep within a Panasonic website.

What it does tell us is the point at which Panasonic decided to start cheapening out on components, affecting which particular models. For example somewhere in 1995 they decided that they weren't going to bother with manufacturing personal stereos with frequency response of 15-20,000Hz and began the trend of limiting also the output volume amplification of their models as well.

Who cares about the specs ? I would be interested more in what they look like, their basic features and the color versions. Further the maximum playtime on battery supply, release date and price.

Those specs are available too, but alas it is all embedded into flash (in Japanese) So when I get time I'll try and extract and update with those too. Production date is the last item on the line.

This is all the SX series images extracted from Japanese Panasonic website

eingang - 2010-09-12 16:14

Wow ! Very nice... What homepage is it ? Great to see all the data... As I remember the SX99F looks identical to the SX65F I have, but I have one in blue too which is not mentioned in the list...

We should find out the missing ones and complete the list....

tuna - 2010-09-13 09:23

SX45 and SX25 are missing. SX45 is a SX50 without the LCD remote and the SX25 is a SX35 without any remote.

An amazing list this is! I didn't know the SX75 was availble in so many colours. I think I would part with any of my Sonys for a green one or a black one.

STUPENDOUS TOPIC - I am in debt to you Plop for your sleuthing efforts and find. The list of models/specs and group picture is a great reference

My favorite mfg. of Walkman Panasonic the underdog. Although my love is with the S series which are IMO the best technology Panny put together in a series the SX series had a lot of performance for the money but not mechanically the equal to S Series. Of note is the SX75 probably hands down the top performer in the SX line with the fastest FF and Rew of ANY walkman 90 min. tape in about 60 seconds !!!!!!! With amazing clarity and range but somewhat lacking on power output. In defense of Panasonic lower output their amps were cleaner and better designed. Again TUNA can enlighten us on this subject. Sounds like a Jet Engine as it accelerates the tape. With sophisticated micro chip technology to slow the tape down before stopping. TUNA knows the engineering of this wonderful machine very well.

As our combined knowledge is added we are finding even the Panasonic website has some errors to it.

Corrections or additions as follows:
SX10 not listed but exist have BLUE

SX43 not listed but exist have BLUE
SX52 came in GREEN and BLUE colors not listed( I have)
SX70R not listed but exist have Blue. Recording model.
SX75V not listed but exist have Silver
NOTE: this model even though it shares a
common number 75 with SX75 it is TOTALLY
mechanically different and far from the
performance of the SX75.
SX99F Not listed but exist have it in Blue.
This is a recording model

I have the following models with photos. Nearly all have remotes and original headphones and both recording models have microphones. Several of the 70 series have a see through LCD that has deep red circular side input lighting that is the most awesome remote I know in the dark.

yes these players are fascinating. and though the s series had a more complex transport, sx is better intergrated, offers lower wow and is much moreefficient energy wise.

Recently added two early SX models thanks to fellow member emonkeybiz on eBay. The RQ-SX5 is in a beautiful metallic greenish blue. This model is one of few SX models with extended frequency response 15-20,000 Hz and 5mw output. Most better Panasonic's had twin amps and at full volume distortion was kept to minimum. They are clean sounding. The SX-7 in black has the same unique door drop down and back feature from the cassette. I believe this is one of the best door mechanisms which allows significantly easier insertion and removal of tapes. Picture on SX5 clearly shows how much tape sticks past end of door and out from it. Many RQ-S models have this feature also. Am unable to describe quality of sound as both are in need of belts.
