As for your no-sound-problem: I'm not an electronics expert, but most of my units that have bad sound or no sound at all suffer from bad capacitors. These seem to die over time, usually leaking some acid. Check your board and look for discolorations around the caps. Replacing them might fix the problem, but soldering the caps onto the board can be really tricky.
