Hej everybody°
The later versions of the Sony WM DD (DD1/DD11) series have a pretty easy PCB compared to the earlier Versions (DD II/III/DC). Some of you reported a common problem with these players.
http://stereo2go.com/eve/forum...6038164/m/8351094015They still look good - run normal, but there is no sound out of the headphones, or only a hum sound especially when you use the Dolby switch. Sometimes this strange sound appears when you change from NORMAL to METAL. A deep brrrrruuuuuuuuzz - no music or only very, very far in the background. I had several of these Sony´s and tried to find a solution. My PCB looked like new - then I decided to change the SMD caps/electrolytes on the board to see what happens..... and yes this is the source for problem. Because Sony used cheap parts at this time I had a few bad smelling sukkers on the PCB - leaking SMD caps! I changed all of them and put everything back together - and wow - the Walkman sounds like new!
It´s pretty easy to change the SMD caps - you´ll need:
5 x 220uf 4V - change to 220uf 6,3V - same size!
3 x 47uf 4V - change to 47uf 6,3V - same size!
1 x 100uF 4V - change to 100uf 6,3V - same size!
1 x 4,7uF 35V
1 x 10uF 16V
In total 11 SMD Electrolytes
When you change them watch out for the polarity and in some areas it´s helpful to unsolder more the one at the time to reach each of the soldering points without problems. The SMD caps are cheap and easy to get - so bring your DD1/DD11 back to life!
And if you already opened the player - change the rubber of the fly-weel too. I got this spare part in the sanitary section of my local dealer. It fits exactly the old part. One of my WM had this mechanically sound (in addition to no sound out the headphones) and it was the rubber ring - it got old and cracked so the motor could not engage anymore.
Now the Sony looks and sounds like new!
Here are some pics for you:
