EXCELLENT great clear pictures. THANK YOU
for posting. We all would like to hear how the
repair holds up after some amount of use. Let us know after you have played maybe 20 ninety minute tapes how your repair is holding up?

Hello Stumm7.
Thank you very much for the posting.
What was the sand paper used for? Were you shrinking the diameter of the metal wheel?
Kind regards.

stumm7 - 2010-12-17 09:45

Hello Elite!
The diameter? A few little! I used sand paper grain 120. I'm sorry my english is very basic.

Hello John!
I used the walkman several hours and still is holding up. Play and Stop test. Regards

There are no comments on the final photo like the others...and it looks like a small extra piece of plastic has been inserted. Is this the case?

Nice job by the way.

Hello Nak D
I do not understand why you doubt my post. If you doubt that does not add a comment in the last picture. I think it was not necessary to add a comment. Thanks and happy 2011.

Hello stumm7,
Congratulations on this work and the
excellent documentation. Thanks for sharing. good job
We do not criticize you. We discuss here.
We are grateful to your contribution. It is valuable for all DD fans.

I have a lot of such drives repaired.
At first I have exactly as you work.
The problem is here: the gear is after repair too small.
Two out of three repairs as it makes problems.
So I've developed method.
I add one tooth to.

Your method is good for Walkman in the showcase or underused.
For sale or everyday use is non really sure.

Here are a few notes of my method:
-The center disc is reduced to 27.7 mm.
-The ring remains open to a of teeth.
-The tooth is formed with epoxy
-The rest of the repair I work like you.

By the way
Sorry my bad English.
I can not that language.
I translate texts with Google translator.

I wish all the best for 2011,
Renato

Hi Renato, Thanks for your post. After performing the repair, test several times and still remains very good. If I understand correctly the problem is that the plastic shrinks over the years. Reducing the metal wheel everything can be solved. Adding instant adhesive helps the broken part is not too much force.
I too translate with Google Translator my native lenguage is spanish.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

Some years ago I used the method to reduce the metal disk. For greater precision is necessary to run high-speed disc with a drill, otherwise the disc is off center and increases the wow and flutter. However, after I used the system to add a couple of teeth, I think it is better. With the system to reduce the metal disc you get a wheel smaller than the original. The risk is that sometimes the wheels do not intersect perfectly and sgranino consumed.
However, one important thing that is overlooked is that after the reassembly of the Walkman it is necessary to calibrate the wow and flutter using a tape with a frequency of 3000 Hz at 0 db. You connect the headphone output (level 6) to a wow and flutter meter by connecting a resistor of at least 16 ohm in parallel to the line in of the wow and flutter meter. This calibration is necessary after disassembly and reassembly of the engine.

Hello Dottor Walkman
Many thanks for your tips. I will try the method of add teeths with my WM-5.

johnedward - 2011-01-04 12:14

The WM-5 is Belt driven same as the WM-2.
It is NOT a DD mechanism walkman. I have rebelted them, fairly easy.

Hello ! I have similar problem whit my central gear. I'm affraid reduce a central gear. But now I hope I start operation. I have only DD33 whit no problem - works perfect!.
Another DD 30 whit this problem , DDIII whit this problem and DD II whit this problem

rerooted - 2011-01-15 10:33

an accidental quick fix : i started to clean up my cassettes along with my dead wm-d3 which apparently kicked the bucket. i haven't been able to get even one turn in months. i thought i'd give it one more try with some fresh, new duracells. bingo,,,it started like lighting. it has always had tickitis and was a great sound recorder. i had done 50-57 tapes with it. looks like when that one is dead it is just playing dead...i think the extra kick unjamed the broken geer and is now free to turn.

Look my central gear!
Initially I measured the metal center and is 28mm.
Then .... I tried to grind using a cylindrical abrasive stone.

Hello
I can't see the image

Can you re-upload
Thanks

In your last picture - is not a wrong position a plastic part?
The normaly position is with the 3 pin up? Correct position is with the 3 pin up. You have the wrong assembly. No offence!

Hi Folks

Should we start a request on Facebook and see if we can get some social networking site to help us convince SONY we need these replacement parts?

Just a thought and we pay fair money for the defective part clearly but we need their engineering help here?? There are hundreds of thousands of these Walkmans that need this fix

What do you think?
