Whats up with my WMD6C?

doublecee - 2008-03-05 13:37

Plays great, sounds great... then without warning starts playing at lightspeed, as if the play head has been engaged in FFwd (even though thats not the case of course)....

Thanks

Hi doublecee, can you give us more detail & what's 'lightspeed'?

Thanks

well, imagine Alvin and the chipmonks, sped up...

Pinch roller not pressing on capstan hard enough, surely?

My first ever radio casette did this too.
If only I'd realised back then what an easy fix it was...

well, I read someplace that there was a resistor or something that fails and causes this speed increase. Is that true?

Like mentioned before it may be a mechanical defect like low pinch roller pressure. But may also be electronical, the servo chip IC601 is a common failure. I did once kill the transistor Q601 which controls the motor current and is driven by IC601. Failure of either causes high speed playback. Roll Eyes

seems fine now.... Maybe just a one off. I'll keep an eye on things for a bit, but she is playing and recording fantastically...

HI,

I was just wondering if you have any problems recording on metal tapes when using batteries?
I also have a WM-D6C and the recordings when using metal tapes (Sony Metal Master or Maxell MX-S) come out terrible, especially near the beginning of the tape. All settings are OK on the walkman.
Thanks,

Yes, I has the same problems but only with metal tapes of 90 and 120 min. MAXELL and TDK, not the same with SONY or BASF chrome-metal tapes. (the thickness of the tape is critical)

I discover one thing: The pinch roller must be completely "flat" to prevent this problem, I have to clean and "rectify" the flatness of the pinch roller with a super-fine sandpaper, you can obtain one from car paint detail shops, the method is easy: put to work the unit, wet the fine sandpaper and let to light touch the roller about three minutes, (or test every short time) test with the tape you have problems until the problem dissappear, but must be very careful with this operation, remember "sanding" is an abrasive method.

I hope you can fix your WM-D6C, one of the finest quality recording devices in the world.
