Anyone know of a source for a MNF-1600B or upgrade motor for a WM TPS-L2. Mine turns a little but binds up soon after starting. I tried lube as it was pretty much seized but only freed up so far.
Belts are good.
I might sell it for parts if I can't get a motor or free up mine. I'm the original owner but unit hasn't run since mid 80's. can't remember..I might have bought it in Japan. SN153935

you might try this. disconnect the belt which goes around the motor pulley to take some tension off the motor. put in a couple of healthy batteries and let it run for a good while. i don't think it will hurt it anyway. again i will defer to someone more knowledgeable than i for more advice. i have freed up a couple of these motors that appeared dead in the past and they are still running ..

I did notice it kept running a little longer with each few tries after lubing it. I'll keep trying.

hi--hope it works for you. you won't believe this but it happened today. i just got a sony wm-16 in the mail a few days ago. it sounded good but nothing turned except the motor. the belt wasn't broken but very stretched. my belt arrived today in the mail so i installed it. not to bad a job except i never saw the inside of that one before. the belt is almost 10 in. long. all went fairly well and it powered up and was working fine. i played a few cassettes and even fell asleep with it running. the auto-rev. was working fine also. as a sat it down i turned on the computer for some reading. suddenly it stopped dead. just like a broken belt will do but the belt was new and fit great. i took it apart and found the problem quickly. the motor had stopped and it seemed like it had seized up. it did,, as it would barly turn with my fingers. i turned it several minutes with a pliers and finally it started running again as i type i am listening to it right now. i am beginning to believe there are some ghosts in these old players. i have no idea what caused it to quit after around 5 hours of playing.

i kinda think my problems are piling up but i will get past them sooner or later. my near mint-seldom ever used tps-l2 just played it's last yesterday evening. same problem as yours it seems. it was playing along fine after i first got it and got the motor turning freely. then the belt broke and i replaced both being careful not to make them to tight. i had it running fine for about 5 hours when the motor slowed and a loud whine started coming from the player. i didn't think it was the motor. i left it until i took it apart today. sure enough it was the motor. i tried leaving the disconnected motor running for a few hours but finally shut it down. i have a spare wm-3 motor which may work but i have not tried it yet. it looks like the only thing holding the motor in is 2 screws which i have taken out. also i only see 4 wires running into the pcb which i hope should soldier in fairly easily,,"I HOPE". oh ya---the wm-16 is still working fine.

hi--well garee,,i had hopes for some of these "stuck motors" which seem to start running well again after a little help. the sony WM-16 that i got re-running and rebelted and worked well for a couple of weeks is finished. the motor locked up again and this time for good. it finally hit it's final resting place in the trash can. personally i will not try to get another stuck motor going again after 4 straight failures. something inside them has failed to the point of FREEZING UP" and is not going to be revereseable very often. the only option is what you proposed and that is locating another motor. in this case the value was low anyway and to me not worth the effort. in the case of the TPS-L2 i guess i would still be on the lookout for one. if one can be found it looks like the motor replacement should be not be to hard if your handy with a soldiering gun.

I got it going but it quit again just like yours. I'm going to take the motor apart when I get a chance and see if anything can be done ..but I doubt if it can. Too bad, as the little walkman was way ahead of it's time and is definately a nostalgia trip for me as I bought it new.

hey--garee---don't give up...i know the wm-3 sony motor is the same and there are probably others which will work also.i have a beat up but running sony wm-3 coming soon. i now have 2 boats sinking but i'm still hanging on. one of my motors is fine but running backwards. the other is running but bairly as it is like yours. it whines and wants to slow down and stop. i will cut it open soon just to see what it looks like and why it is failing. remember, it looks like an easy motor to replace with just the 2 screws and 4 accessible wires to soldier on. i need to find out how i got both motors running in reverse as the one motor is fine. i have had it change ( polarity ) several times but i don't know how i did it. when i try to install the new used motor i hope i don't run into the same problem of the motor running in reverse. does anybody out there in walkman land know which other motors will drop in and also how can one get the motor running in the correct direction again. help !!!!!!!

I had a frozen motor and i drilled a tiny hole in the back carefully and penetrated with contactsprey and WD 40
First i had to help it running by a drill,but suddenly it ran for itself til it froze again
than i took a light hammer and gave a few (light)tics on the pully shaft
Maybe it gave some space in the bearings and by the contactspray the grease hase solved a bit
now it runs okee and powerfull, but i dont know for how long
