Tools, materials suggested for repairs?

wombat - 2009-04-07 16:49

I would like to purchase a small solder iron to do some repairs, like components to boards, etc.
How many watts should I need? Any soldering tips? Core flux? or not.
How do I get some belts for various WM's?
What else do I need?
How do you remember what goes where, after its apart and sitting on the table?

Wombat,You will want to get a small wattage soldering iron. Around 25 watts is plenty.
You will want to use flux core solder NOT!! acid core.
You might want to get a soldering iron stand to keep you iron from falling off the table and onto your lap (OUCH!)
You might want to get some small screwdrivers (jewelers type) and some micro needle nose pliers. And a belt installation and removal tool (Very handy). Nod Yes
I order from these guys all the time and they are great! Fast shipping and fair prices.
Here are some cassette belts and parts. Parts and belts.
And they have a lot of special tools too. Tools.
Soldering irons etc. Soldering irons,etc.
I use a a digital camera and take a photo of what I want to remember when it comes to putting something back together or I make a quick sketch or diagram, it works great!
I hope this will help you get your toolbox going. Big Grin

And patience. Patience by the bucketload.

Some of these machines are like watches, and they require steady hands.

i think everyone has there own patience level. once you reach it STOP !!!!!!. get all your pieces together and put them in a sealable baggie. i regret not stopping on a few projects. everything gets a little easier with a fresh start on another day. if you get in over your head let it rest till you get some knowledge on your project. i pitched a couple and regret doing it now. even the parts can become very helpful in future projects.
