I've been trying to refurbish my childhood Sony RQ 156 and as soon as I turn it on to cassette mode the cassette motor spins in the play direction and it will not stop regardless of what buttons are pushed. Any ideas?

The RQ 156 is a National player and not a Sony.

Either way any idea why the motor won't stop turning?
