Sony WM-DD2 tape head problem

Hi. I bought a DDII on the flea market and when i powered it up the tape ran much too fast and the sound was very quiet (and too fast) - so i decided to take a look inside.
I think i found the problem. When i push PLAY the motor is running and the tape runs quite fast but I noticed that the pinch roller and tape head don't get raised/pulled up properly. When the DDII is disassembled i can push up the little white longish plastic thingie (yellow area in the image) manually and it pulls the head and roller into correct position and suddenly plays in proper speed. When i push STOP it flips back and releases the tapehead and pinch roller.
I noticed a little black lever (red area in the image) underneath the center gear that looks like it's meant to push up this plastic thingie. Maybe some part is missing? Which mechanical piece/action pulls up the tapehead/pinch roller when i push play? Any hints?
thanks in advance!

I have not opened my DC2 in a while, but from what I remember, the head/pinch roller assembly is pushed down after a mechanism on/under the center gear pushes a lever down when play is pressed. I'd try to fix that broken center gear first.
Check if the protrusion on the white part is bent on the other side. It's the actual part that pushes the assembly on the door down.

rengzi is right. Could it have been broken off by the cracked center gear?

thanks guys. the part is missing. since i couldn't find it anywhere i decided to sacrifice the whole DDII to use as spare parts for my D3 - fixed the center gear
