WM-5 should be similar to WM-2. You'd likely need the belt changed.

sonygal - 2011-07-14 11:08

Welcome to the forum, Sonygal.

Fortunately, you can follow the link below for the WM-D3 manual.

@bub: WM-5 are better than WM-2, especially its metallic body over the plastic body.

WM-5 & WM-2 are pretty identical internally

lapis - 2016-02-03 07:54

@AO: Yes, in a way. But WM-5 are still better than WM-2, which both are superior to TPS-L2. ;-)

Nope, with the exception of the volume control they are very identical.

You can't really compare these units with the dear old TPS-L2 but if you do you will find the TPS far far superior in every way to the WM-2/5.  After all, the superb D6C is in fact a TPS-L2 with a few more bells and whistles.  The TPS-L2 transport was about the most stable ever, brass flywheel and bushings, metal gears, huge motor, a purists dream.

That said, the WM-2 is my favourite walkman ever.  I own over 50 in various colours.  It's a near-perfect design and a beautiful thing to look at but it has it's shortcomings, it doesn't sounds great compared to earlier/later units and the plastic drive can have a lot of w & f.

lapis - 2016-02-03 09:39

@AO: Does the TPS-L2 have auto-stop in all modes? Only on Play. Forward and Rewind does not have auto-stop, making it very similar to the lower-end Walkmans from the 90's like the WM-FX21, which I have.

The WM-2 have auto-stop on all modes, something the high-end Sony Walkmans have, like WM-10.

I am not saying that TPS-L2 is all crap, it is obviously better than the current players we have today. It sure is the base form of the D6C. WM-3 and WM-3EX are better than TPS-L2.

True but it's doesn't necessarily mean it's inferior just because it wasn't around when all those gimmicks were invented.  It doesn't have Mega Bass, auto-reverse nor a 7-channel graphic equaliser either, so is it inferior to those that do?

lapis - 2016-02-03 12:48

@AO: Actually full auto-stop is not a gimmick, there is a reason one must have them. Most cassette decks have auto stop on all modes. Therefore it is implemented on good Walkmans.

If not a auto-reverse model cassette player, then auto-stop is needed to keep the batteries from wearing out from the tape arriving at the end of it's travel.
