They have good cooperation in that time, one has good tuners, tape motors, etc...the other has a good design, chips, speakers and so on.

Simple answer. Kenwood didn't generally make personal stereos, they usually outsourced production to other manufacturers like Toshiba and AIWA.

This is basically a Toshiba walkman, hence the interchangeable parts.
