I've claimed my dads, love the thing after getting it to work. But I know nothing about it. 

Anyone know when these were out?

It also has some technical issues which I'm hoping to identify...I do want to get it repaired as well, but I'm still at school which just means it's going to take me a while to save up the cash for it!

I'm sure it's a common fault due to it being sat around for around 20 years or so but:

I popped a cassette in, pressed play, the sound was distorted. Sounded a bit fuzzy and such.

Tried a different tape, got the same thing.

About 10 minutes later I pressed play with a different cassette, now it no longer plays them. I can hear the motor going but the cassettes don't 'move'. 

And finally, this may be a more complex, the door doesn't shut properly. The hinge kinda pops out on one side. If I push down by the hinge it will close properly but pressing stop makes the door pop out a little.  

Anyone know what the issue(s) is likely to be? Drive band?

This is one of AKAI's first line of personal stereo.

Yes they do have some issues. It's hard to find someone to repair those, parts or service manual are not available anywhere.

based on your description it could be anything from bad caps to leakage , torn belt etc.
