Sony WM-DC2 from eBay suppose to be in excellent working condition restoration
retrodos - 2012-04-11 20:35
Won this off eBay was suppose to be in great working condition, I think not!! Came with even a broken battery cover, corrosion on battery terminals and bad gear lever assy. To make battery worst, volume control is very dirty and unit jam when playing a tape and even missing screws. Not sure what this seller idea of great working condition is? Hate to see what their bad condition ones are. Link to listing and some pictures below before restoration, if I decide to restore it.

Decided to rebuilt it, new capacitors new battery terminals , fix the center gear and teardown and overhaul the transport with new lubricate.

Rebuilted the transport and tested it, by running 1.5 vdc into the motor, can't barely hear it run. Just now need to wait a couple of days for the Panasonic 4v 220uf capacitors to recap the board and this one will be ready to be use.

Nice work
One question how do you fix the broken batterylid?

my DC2 has started "slipping" during play when I use it
I guess the gear is really knackered
would you consider giving my deck a service?

After restoration, rebuilt transport including center gear, replaced capacitors, cleaned volume pot, replaced battery cover clean all contacts. Works like brandnew no clicking sounds at all, must say this walkman sounds just like the D6c, but much smaller.

Just noticed the serial number on this US silver star DC2 is #18023, a few numbers higher than my one from UK without the silver star.
It has the original amorphous head with the grub screw sticking out of it, but the PCB is a newer one, without the diodes straddling across the Dolby ICs. I wonder if ~18000 was the turning point for Sony to use the newer ICs.
Strange how in the before pictures it has a silver door release and in the after photos it has a black door release.

The before and after has black latches. Do have one with a silver latch to.

Maybe it is just the light from the way the picture was taken, but it does look somewhat shinier than simple black plastic.

Picture was way overexposed, pointed the flash gun to close
