radio.raheem - 2012-05-05 10:58
I have been collecting boomboxes and walkmans for years...boomboxes are easy...i don't think walkmans are....sure the head is easy...but how do you clean the capstan bars and pinch rollers....this is regarding walkmans like the dd9 aiwa 1o1...basically any walkman with electronic transport....old mechanical walkmans are easy to do...not so the electronic ones...the walkman in question is a sony this one

I use ISOPROPANOL (Isopropyl Alcohol) for the metal bits, For the rubber pinch rollers such chemicals can dry out and perish them, but at a "pinch", you can do this if it's infrequent. If you do try wiping rollers with a damp cloth to remove any IPA residue. There are also rubber platen cleaners around (most likely use for office equipment). These clean and restore grip...but not sure if this is the best way...

Still not realy the answer im looking for guys....a walkman isn't much use if you can't clean the pinch rollers...i mean a genral clean...not rerubberizing...
Del that is a classic answer my friend....but these things have given me a new leese of life....I don't say it lightly my friend...but on good headphones these things utterly blow away any boombox i have heard...some sound better than others....but i think im just about through with boomboxes...i still have a few to chose from too...im sure if agent orange is reading this he is amused....afterall agent you have been collecting walkmans longer than anybody else....agent for christ sake get yourself some decent headphones....they will give you and you're walkmans a new lease of life...
agent where is that pick of you with about 500 walkmans under you're bed....i still remember that one

as long as they give you pleasure reno thats all that matters , it just seems strange with you on walkmans instead of boxes
retrodos - 2012-05-05 12:49
For pinch roller use rubber rejuvenator and for capstan and heads use 91% or better Isopropyl Alcohol.
You sure invest in a good HiFi system class A amp and good set of speakers and a good dual capston three head tapedeck and good turntable with decent built CD player with good transport and DAC and you will see how music is suppose to sound, you won't go back. Boomboxes have their place and were design for the go, not serious listening.
500 walkmans under the bed?

retrodos....i have the best hifi in the world...well it does me fine...i use 2 12band eq for a start linked togeather....nothing anybody has ever heard beats my hifi....best of all it diddn't cost 12 million $$$$ i would challange anybodys with a decent hifi that cost 20x more than mine on headphones.....i just don't use it...she is all packed away....for now im quite happy with my walkmans....like i have stated on a good pair of headphones...they sound better than any boombox i have owned...but i shal always love boomboxes....had them all...been using them since the age of 10 or 11...maybe it's just the change in derection that was needed
and my question still remains.....i need to clean the pinch rollers...not rejuvinate them
on a boombox you just use a cotton bud and the pressure against the capstan bar cleans the pinch roller....what about these electronic walkmans
retrodos - 2012-05-05 13:27
Most highend walkmans do sound better then the tapedeck on any boombox, some walkman like D6C are consider to be nakamichi's of tape deck with a good set of iem's or cans and good headphone amp, reason why most go D6C or DC2 due to the lineout option, to use a external headphone amp and of course the DD system.
radio.raheem - 2012-05-05 13:38
yes but i can't get pressure against the rubber wheel or capstan....most of these walkmans only work with the door open/ closed....now do we follow my friend

For logic based walkmans, it depends on the model. But you can usually defeat the door open or no tape circuit tricking the unit to think there is a tape inside.
I usually take the door off if I need to give mine a real good service. If you do this, be careful to not damage the delicate ribbon cable. Also some BluTack comes in handy to defeat those logic switches. Will also need to occasionally rotate the stationary reel in one direction on auto reverse models to also trick the unit into thinking there is a tape.
I use AF Platenclene to clean and restore the rubber parts. Does the same as the Caig Labs Caikleen RBR, but a whole lot more easier and cheaper to get hold of in the UK. Just one squirt onto a cotton bud is plenty for one pinch roller. If the rollers are really filthy brown or super shiny, then a gentle scrub with 100% isopropyl alcohol or denatured ethanol on a cotton bud followed by the Platenclene does the trick.
100% isopropyl alcohol or denatured ethanol on the metal parts with cotton buds.
Cotton buds are mega cheap. Bought 600 for a quid in Poundland.

You paid £1? In poundland? Fair exchange, no robbery.
plop - 2012-05-05 15:47
...and sometimes even there they sell stuff for less than a pound

Hey Radio raheem,
If I understand you correctly you should use one of these:
They will certainly do the job, I also recommend you to use 95% Isopropyl Alcohol instead of the supplied solution.
I hope this helps you.

do what plop does- unscrew the door, tape down the tape detector levers/pins, and just clean it with alcohol. Or just manually clean and turn it with the door open. That EX674 series is VERY easy to clean.
radio.raheem - 2012-05-06 11:23
Thanks to all of you for your replies....i have cleaned it...i guess there is onky one way and that's manually...not as easy as a boombox...but there are some great tips here..cheers to all
