To Italy And Back - My DC2
djlec - 2012-06-30 15:31
It all started when I researched what my Walkman DC2 was going for since it had been stored for some time and it had the dreaded click. I nearly fell off of my chair after some research and discovered it was a very rare and highly sought after Walkman.
I decided to send it to Dotter Walkman after some research and I shipped it to Italy on March 19, 2012. Leonardo (Dotter) and I had a bit of a flutter since it took 30 Days to get there from California, USA. Apparently, Italy Customs had opened it but Leonardo assured me that it was fine when he received it.
If anyone is interested here is a You Tube video and mine is on the right.

When I received the quote I hesitated for close to a Week wondering if it was worth it. Leonardo went so far as to pull in an e-mail friend (Antun) to get a full understanding of why I was hesitating. This helped a lot.
Would like to note that Leonardo kept me constantly informed throughout the process and this was very much appreciated. He is absolutely stellar in this regard with communication.
I decided to proceed since this unit has a very great sentimental value to me.
Then my Nakamichi BX-300 was retrieved from storage and it also made some noise. I knew about the idler wheel problem on this Deck so I changed that. Set it up and played with it a while and then I started scouring eBay for Tapes.
I then wondered if I was nuts getting back into this and then I started to find some adequate Cassette deals.
Then the Nakamichi was sent into service since it was never serviced since new.
With all of this it is getting a little expensive coming back.
What actually compelled me to start all of this was searching for some used CD’s for my iPod. I ended up wondering why am I doing this when I have the Original LP’s.
Once the DC2 Repair commenced with Leonardo it just sort of steam rolled after that.
I am now listening to a Cassette that was recorded from an unknown Turntable, Settings, etc. and it sounds marvelous. Since I last used the DC2 I evolved greatly with my LP Collection and Turntable. Once the Nakamichi is returned I firmy believe thanks to Leonardo and my Deck Tech this will be a smoking combo when I start recording again.
I wish to thank Leonardo and Antun profusely for their help throughout this exercise.
A very dear old friend landed back to me in California on June 27, 2012.

For some reason it double posted on me.
I received one reply;
" So how well does it sound now? What headphones did you decide to pair up with it? "
Bearing in mind that I had 24 Cassettes only that I had previously recorded on many years ago. I was able to briefly compare some Led Zeppelin songs that were uploaded on my iPod with the Original CD's in Lossless and the Cassette. I do not know what Turntable, Cartridge, LP Pressing, etc. that I used to record the Cassette with.
I felt the Walkman sounded better than the iPod. When I get my Nak back and I start to record again it will be a very different ball game.
At present I am using the Vsonic GR07 In Ear Monitors. With all of the expenses so far the Headphones will have to come last. Would like to get the Sennheiser HD25 but there have been no sale prices yet.

Welcome back to the joy of analog tape. Every time you pick up and hold your DC2 a moment is jumped back in time to bit of joy and fun had once long ago. Nice to touch upon those again and enjoy the true quality the DC2 is capable of. I am sure once you record on the Nak after its repaired from a good sound source either CD or Turntable you will realize that IPOD/mp3 is convenience but if your listening for the experience of sound to be enjoyed close to the real live thing then your setup will be sure to please.
Keep a look out for a SEQ-50 Sony analog equalizer. Can be had for $50-100 on ebay although not common they pop up. With the DC2 a little judicious use of boost especially in the low end can really bring out the sound to your ears or compensate a little for less than stellar headphones. Oh btw the happy face curve with bass and highs boosted most and mids depressed really is NOT the way to use a EQ. Keep in mind that boosting one freq. takes slightly from the frequency next to it. With EQ more boost is not very often better. BTW the SEQ-50 also can be used quite well and it helps the sound of mp3 players. Especially because it acts upon the ANALOG sound signal ( which is REAL VIBRATIONS OF SOUND) vs. mp3 EQ that digitally adjusts the digital signal. I prefer a EQ that works in Analog any day over a digital EQ.

I wish to thank Leonardo and Antun profusely for their help throughout this exercise.
You're welcome mate! I'm glad I could offer some assistance.
I think you will enjoy your DC2 very much now that it's at it's peak operating level. As you will undoubtedly experience, your DC2 will be fully capable of fully utilizing top flight type-II and IV tapes as well as being able to properly drive a pair of high quality headphones.
It has to do with the player itself but it also has to do with precise measurements and fine tuning of mechanical and electrical components that Leo does.
Analog never sounded any better than that!
Cheers!
