SHARP GF-8585

deech - 2012-09-19 02:41

Hello to everyone!

This is my latest addition a Sharp gf-8585

I find it a very nice looking box.

It powers up but unfortunately it has some issues.

The radio doesnt work it needs a new string .

The cassette doesnt play either i guess it needs a new belt.

One of the antennas is not the original .

It has some scratches but i guess those give it a  character

so not in the best condition but i purchased it for the looks of it!!

If anybdy has a service manual or an owners manual for it and

wills to share it please message me!

Enjoy some pics!

How does it sound bison??

because all i hear from mine is parasites from the radio!

I got mine from downtown Athens at first sight i thought it was a sharp gf-9191

but from a closer look it was the gf-8585.

Great looking box Mr Vu! quite similar with the gf-8585.

It s actually the GF-8585(H) which has a phono out also.

By the way Deli you look great at the summer meet up!

I was in England the summer of 2006 and i went to Strattford upon Avon

for a music festival to see Daft Punk, after the group ended its show i

was in a hurry back to London i slept somewhere

near the train station and when i woke up the morning there

was a car boot sale there  (near the station).

I always wondered if car boot sales (correct me if i m wrong) in England are good to find boxes and stuff like that.

And when and where do they usually take place.??

mine sounds ok deech, its not gonna set any car alarms off but its ok,

i think anything lower spec  by sharp than a 8585 isnt worth having.

deech - 2012-09-20 05:57

Thank you for the info Deli ! Iwill try to open it and have a look at it.

I like the looks of the GF-5757 it might be a medium to low size box

but it looks fine !

Good find, that 8585. Seems a perfect fixer-upper. You can put signal in it from the phone in connection at the back to have an idea how it sounds. Just keep the volume of the source to a minimum, as the source was originally meant for turntables.

In the sound department, there is no comparison between 8585 and the cheapo.

Other common problems for the 8585 would be the switches, but nothing that a little (or a lot) of deoxit could not fix

Thank you for the tips.

I didnt know you could plug a device to a phono out.

I did plug my phone and i had sound only from the right speaker,

the switch even though it was turned to phono or radio or tape(power off)

played music in all 3 positions.

The hi's in the beggining of some tracks were louder when the bass was heavier or i had the loudness switch on, the box was rattling and shaking.

That is proof that you have a poorly functioning switch (the tape-line-radio), and probably the rest of them are in the same situation. Deoxit is your friend here. For the sound coming from only one channel, try putting the RCA's reversed (left to right and right to left). If the other speaker is singing, then it-s the cable or phone, if nothing is singing then unfortunately it-s the 8585

Hi,I have a sharp gf-555 and on both decks it is chewing tapes.it ff and rews but on play back it plays for 10 secs then chews the tape.I dont think its the belts.also when I look at the spindles the left one is turnining and the right is not.

As Northerner says in the other thread it will be the rubber on the spindle, very common on all Sharp boxes and not too difficult to fix. Some RC fuel line or similar will do it, I have also done one with these little Fimo bead things, they seem to work really well to. I bought a whole bag of them cheapish and they will last me forever. Perfect size to.

What country you in?

dazzy.j - 2015-07-16 07:32

what should the gauge of the rubber be? and does this affect the speed of playback? cheers
