Aiwa HS-P10

minty - 2012-09-21 06:57

Clip
Here is my recently purchased Aiwa HS-P10. I can find no information about it on the Internet. I think it was only released in Japan. It does not use an external battery box. Two AAA battery's are inserted directly into the unit.

I have replaced the belt and it runs perfectly, but there is a problem. It will play a cassette on side A and then reverse to side B and play that side also. But when the end of side B is finished, it will not engage side A and keeps making a clicking noise. Any idea what the fault may be? It plays perfectly apart from this.

Hi Minty,

Could it be the auto reverse direction control switch playing up?

minty - 2012-09-21 07:10

It's really bugging me. I don't see any damage to the transport. It has a similar transport to most early Aiwa's. I'm hoping this is a known fault on these early Aiwa's, and can be fixed.

I've taken this one apart. Seems the teeth on one of the gears is worn. It's a semi circle gear which pushes the mechanism to either side. I'm hoping to get a damaged HS-P09 to use for this part. I think they share the same mechanism. I have taken a liking to this little Aiwa. Sounds great with the graphic equaliser. Hopefully I can get it going again.

Hi Minty,

Congrats on your new player, it's a nice one from Aiwa's good old days.

This player (HS-G10) is the Japanese Version of HS-G101 the younger brother of the HS-J101/J10/J700 and the successor of HS-G09/G9/G600 they both use the same mechanism but yours has a semi-logic mechanism. The 09 (9/600US) series uses a spring to reverse the gear while the 10 (101/700US) series uses a sensor to trigger and reverse the gear.

I believe the center gear is the cause for that clicking noise.

It's probably cracked due to dried gear; it's hard for the gear to enter into reverse mode so it's clicking.  The teeth are worn because it is stuck and it's grinding the same spot.

Just be carefull when you buy a J09 for parts because most of them suffer from this problem, its better if you go for J101/J700 the gear is much stronger.

Hope this helps, good luck repairing it.

minty - 2012-10-28 11:07

Thanks for the excellent info. Although the center gear appears to be perfect. The problem seems to be a very small half circle gear. About the width of a pencil. The teeth are worn down on it, and it is unable to push the slider to engage reverse.

thelion - 2012-10-28 11:32

Yes, but this is the effect, not the cause, there are two parts in the center gear; the top part is one piece with the bottom part, only the middle part is supposed to be movable with the rest of the gear. Trust me, I've been fixing those for a long time...there is a spring in the middle that forces the gear up and cause misalignment with the rest of the gear.

Hi minty, I have an original spanish aiwa catalogue with small info about it

minty - 2012-10-30 08:12

Thank you Hugo. Perhaps you can email me the page from the catalogue. I hope to get a PC-202 to use for parts. Hopefully I can get it up and running.

I Have to tell you though, that i'm not 100% sure about the mid level units (like the P202 and PC202) if they have the same center gear. The other day I opened up my PC202MkIII  and I've found out that they use a different gear altogether. Therefore I've put a question mark next to them on the list I gave you. you need to check the service manual to be 100% sure.

Of course. It's sent.

Thank you Hugo. Most appreciated.

minty - 2012-11-01 03:24

What about a HS-P202? Will this have the same mechanism and center gear?

I am afraid not, I thinks all the 202 series are budget players therefore they don't use this gear.

thelion - 2012-11-01 05:58

I Have checked my Japanese HS-J85 (J35 World /J350 US) which is the least expensive from the list and it has the center gear. I believe that all the models with the brushed silver panel where the main buttons are have this center gear and all the black panel players have a smaller different gear. Check the catalog for a reference the successors look very much similar to it, like HS-J86/J36/J360.

BTW how much are you willing to invest? I can keep an eye for you.

25 euro is about as much as I'm willing to pay. I'm keeping an eye out. I might get lucky, and get a non working P-09 or something similar for that sort of money. Fingers crossed.

Hi,

I have just got one of these, the motor turns good with the batteries but needs the belt replaced, could anyone tell me how to get access to the belt. It appears to be constructed just like my HS-P09.

any help greatly appreciated.
