Recently Won Sony WA-8000 - Repair Questions

Hello, everyone.
I've been busy with classwork and just plain laziness! Recently I came upon the hard to find Sony WA-8800 (or WA-8000 mkII) thanks to Retrodos. I found this unit to be really cool, and it immediately became a talking point at work as well (my colleagues were surprised by the thinness of it, haha). Some say it was over stuffed with features, but I found it a unique and useful unit - especially the alarm and sleep features. Anyway, last week I found the original WA-8000 on eBay, and I won it.
The seller is a good one, he provided the original manual in very good condition (this model goes back to the 80s!) along with the unit, plus the original AC adapter. He did mention in the listing that the motor on the tape deck runs when you press 'play', but the pins in the deck are not moving. Is it because of a missing or broken belt? Let me know. Also, if I bravely decide to repair it myself (a bit cash-strapped to get it sent to anybody), what would you recommend?

More likely belt, but not a unit that easy to replace the belt on, as requires removing the top PCB board, to access transport.
