Toshiba KT-V780 / KT 4087 belt (solved)

mangaeva - 2012-11-12 00:34

Hey Everyone,

I got my hands on a Toshiba KT-V780 original from japan. It's a beauty and in a really good condition. The only downside is that it doesn't function 100%. As it turned out when I carefully took it apart, the drive belt was broken and it blocked the motor. I removed the belt and now I can hear the motor turning nicely (which makes me really happy). The only problem I have now is that I don't know how long the belt could be for this model. I can imagine that the belt I removed has become way longer than the original. the full lenght of the belt now is around 11 inch. It's a square belt.

I spent some money (5 dollars) on getting a service manual, but unfortunately they do not define the length of the belt, only the part number: 25759060

Is there anyone who has experience with this model? I would be really grateful for every help

My goal was to find a good old walkman which I can keep for future generations and show them how it was in the old days . It's funny to think about that this piece of hardware might be older than me .

Thank you in advance!

PS: What made me sad since the model is in excelent condition that at the sticker on the side, there is a hole through the toshiba logo, which lead to an adjuster on the board. It was so easy to take it appart, whoever punched that hole through there, I would punch him, although I bet he did what he though was best since the hole was there behind the sticker for a reason.

11 inches....wish you could use the more precise total length in millimeters way

Anyways...what you describe sounds like a 80-85mm dia belt in 0.7/0.8mm square cut cross section? Almost the exact the wm40/10 RV uses.

Hey DocP!

Thank you so much for your answer and message!

Unfortunately I couldn't do the measurements today (been a long day) but boy I'll do them tomorrow. I was thinking about it before, I should've done it at that time .

The belt in it's current stretched state is ca. 28,3mm. The motor busted the whole belt, it has a lot of turns init so it is difficult to measure it right when I can't just let it lay flat.

Got some belts for testing(the only ones I could find), I wanted to see how big the belt could've been. Unfortunately the belt was too wide and jumped off but it was enough to tell me that I would need a belt which is around 260mm long maybe. Which probably would be around the 80-85mm diameter which you have mentioned.

I was not able to measure the width of the belt correctly since it's stretched but it is for sure smaller than 1mm so 0,7-0,8 seems about right.

I took a photo of the belt for you with the help of some IKEA measuring line

That poor belt.

Thank you very much for the help so far and I'll be back to you once I have the measures with the thread.

Hey DocP!

Thank you so much for working on this issue.

I made the measurements (thanks to the service manual that I bought, I was able to place the thread to the right places) and I was looking a bit weird at the end. I made the measurement twice to make sure I wasn't wrong. Both measurements ended with 250mm. The mother board is still on the walkman but I made sure with a flash light that the thread is at the right place. I even pulled it to see if all the wheels are turning. So I believe it is safe to say now that instead of a 13,5 cm belt shown on your photo, I'm  going to need a 12,5 cm belt with 0,7-0,8mm square cut.

Do you have such a belt in your stock?

And if you do, how much would you ask for the belt and the shipping? I'm from Hungary.

My Dad had several belts in a little bag but with time they started to melt and it looked awful. I plan on buying more of these belts if the one you send turn out to be the right one. Do you think that time would also show no mercy on those unused belts? (I just want to make sure that I have spare parts )

Thank you again so much for the support!

Your better off just buying perhaps 30 various size belts. Just try different ones until you get one that fits. That's what I do, and it's far cheaper than buying one individual belt. Plus, you also have plenty more belts for future repairs. Ask DocP about his belt kits. Excellent value and quality.

Hey Minty!

Thanks for the advice! I'm discussing with him what belt might be the best to try with right now. I'm not really worried of the price. He has yet to surprise me .

I don't have anything else in my gadget kingdom with drive belts and if one belt would fit, I  can't do anything with the 29 more. I'll just stick to one belt for now .

The walkman was really cheap. 3 Euros. I'm not afraid to spend some money on it .

A)Belt availability :
Sure no hassles at all ...I'll send you the required size...kindly check your PM a bit later

B)Belts storage/deterioration problems :
I have had original Sony belts deteriorate in the vacuum sealed pouches only because partstore dispatches them with a bill stapled which causes air to enter....air entry is preferred by some others although the belts last longer if lightly powdered (fine French chalk powder/talcum).Some people go to the extent of keeping belts in the fridge ....like a 'climate controlled' temperature and humidity regulated safe

Was just wandering the same thing - with all the belts coming in

Done some research, looks like causes for deterioration are:

- UV - not an issue here, since belts are not in the sun like car tires

- ozone

- oxidation (from "normal") oxygen

- lack of humidity

Guess like any other oxidation, the higher the temperature, the faster the reaction.

Talcum supposedly prevents oxygen contact (and also ozone I guess) with rubber (by filling the tiny pores?), sealed container should help I guess - filled with neutral gas even better (nitrogen, CO2, noble gasses). Wine enthusiasts seem to use bottled nitrogen or argon:

So: a sealable container, a squirt of argon or Co2, add a dampened sponge, seal, put in fridge?

Guess nitrogen is not as good as other two gasses since it is not denser than O2 and therefore does not displace it (being denser than O2 is why CO2 is used in fire extinguishers).

I've used almost a whole can of Thetford seal lubricant this summer - first on the chem toilet seals, than caravan window seals and lastly on car door seals - hope they do not fall apart

Not sure if I would dare using it for a Walkman belt though

Hey Everyone!

Here is a little update.

Thanks to DocP this little beauty is singing songs again! The 75mm diameter 0,75-0,80 mm square cut belt seemed to be the perfect fit. (ca. 11,3-11,5mm when stretched into a line).

I hope for those who need help with this model, the information above might be of use

A photo below of the walkman which has been saved from the eternal silence. Thank you for the belts DocP and fortexg for the helpful information about how to keep the belts safe!

Newbee here .... any idea what to order to replace a Toshiba KT-VS1 drive belt?

cashmagic - 2014-05-27 17:57

hi docP  love  this  site, exactly what I need, a new belt for  my toshiba kt-v780 , this has been my most reliable player for putting my thousands of  tapes on a  harddrive.

but  now  the  belt needs replacing and I have  been trying for a  couple of  yrs  to find a supplier.

I am interested in that  bag of 30 different ones  to perhaps  get  3 others working again too.

How do I get  it  and  how  much to Australia.
