Using balanced microphone input as line-in....

Not really a Walkman, but is there a way to use the balanced microphone XLR inputs on a Sony TC-D5pro2 as normal line-in?

Does it has gain knobs of any sort?

Yes, it does... There is also a -20dB mic att switch.... But how to go from unbalanced to balanced.... Or do I see problems that don't exist?

Most things with balanced connectors work with unbalanced outputs. So you might want to try to simply connect a unbalanced source to it. Do check the pinout though!

If you want to be sure though, you could buy a so called DI box: It's a little box that converts unbalanced sound signals to balanced ones.

Just to finish this subject. This week I received a XLR to RCA cable from the bay and it works fine. XLR into the TC-D5pro, mic att switch to -20dB and RCA into any device line-out.

It makes awesome recordings on type II tapes. Sound even better than the D5M and D6C to my ears. So don't be put off by the pro for not having a line-in.
