PX1000 Turns on then Shuts off!

Hope it is ok to put this post here? I just bought a used PX1000 on ebay. the unit is in pretty good condition, a few scratches here and there. Didn't pay alot for the unit either. But when I put batteries in the unit, it powers up the display turns on, green battery light lights and then it shuts down and stays off until I remove one battery and then replace it and the thing cycles again, then shuts off. Any ideas what this could be. CAPS?? or something much worse? Think about send this to Maurice at Retropcdos but if the unit is beyond gone don't want to wast his time. Wish I could do it my self but just don't have the knowledge or skills, but I sure love collecting them.
Thanks

It will most likely need new capacitors anyway. Could also require a new belt, as the PX1000 is an AIWA model from the time of mushy belts.
If you are really unlucky, the flexible PCB ribbon may have suffered damage, as the PX1000 suffers from the splitting of the PCB ribbon at the hinge area due to normal wear and tear. That can cause erratic behaviour of the logic controls.
Get it professionally repaired if you aren't up to the task, there are some very delicate components that the uninitiated repairer can easily fall foul of and destroy these units with the AIWA 0ZM tape transport.
