Ok all did I fall asleep for a decade or maybe I missed something but personally I can not see current bid of $620. I would think real value would be substantially less than that. Any ideas on why several bidders willing to spend this amount ? Ebay Item # 200380017029
EBAY USA WM-2 Boxed
John you're correct, that is crazy. Just because the Walkman is in an original box (not necessarily it's original box) doesn't make it an almost new item! Most of these older Walkman's survived the test of time because they were made to last. If you have a good look at the Walkman you'll see that it is well used, even the latches that hold the cassette cover on have broken off. I have a sinking feel that the buyer will be disappointed.
Anyhow, for me I'm just looking for Walkman's in the best possible condition, if the box adds so much value I might even consider selling the empty boxes I have and keep the Walkmans :-) (I saw someone do this with a rare r/c model kit, he was selling the empty box for $200!).
The condition of the Walkman's I've bought have varied quite a bit and the price I've paid hasn't always been in inline with this. I've got a few mint items that I didn't pay that much for and others cost me a fortune and were in so so condition. I suppose it's the luck of the draw.
Watch out for opportunists!
Cheers,
Greg

Yes...
Some people assume "boxed" to be the same as "New in the Box" or OVP.
I remember about 6 months ago, I was surprised to find our iPhone 3G empty boxes (!) sold for EUR 80-100 on eBay!
Obviously sellers of used, refurbished (and "origin unknown") iPhones found out they can charge a premium of more than 100EUR for "boxed" units.
If there is demand, surely somebody in China will start manufacturing this I thought and - BINGO! Check eBay: copy(!) iPhone 3GS boxes from China exist now, sold for $20.
Human psyche is a strange thing...
Oh, and the WM-2 auction:
Somebody tried very hard to get it at or below $960 with 3 bids in the last seconds from a zero feedback account...
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE IS THAT SOMETIMES YOU WANT THAT ONE AND ONLY ONE TO FINISH YOUR COLLECTION, FOR EXAMPLE WM-1,WM-2,WM-3 AND SO FORTH YOU KNOW THE MISSING LINK, OR THE LAW OF ORDER, OR KEEPING TRACK OF. AT ONE TIME I HAD SO MANY WALKMANS, AS SOON AS YOU OPENED MY CLOSET DOOR THEY CAME DOWN LIKE LAVA FROM A VOLCANO.
