http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200583648890SUPERB FUNCTIONING PLAYER, UPGRADED CAPACITORS and NEW BELT DONE BY DrMR2000 we all know to be a most capable walkman repair member. ( note he has for personal reasons been absent from forum since Sept.). Read below for details of this higher performing player over original ( increased amplifier power).
This EX808HG I will post on Ebay Also (members bid there unless I have offer from member that exceeds my expectation can sell directly) as this model pulls hundreds of views from my observations and has a strong collection status to collectors who watch ebay. Unlike many models that only pull approx. 100 views.
I acquired this Sony WM-EX808HG Boxed in what appeared to be unused condition. It needed a belt. I am unable to de solder pcb boards to get to belts on newer models. As you can see it is a UK issued model with UK charger and label on box including price in GBP. Back in March 2010 I sent several of my Walkman to DrMR2000 ( Maurice in Chicago USA, he and I had become good online friends, he is a electrical and mechanical engineer a most capable walkman repair person many members have used although he has become not active for personal reasons in past many months). I sent this EX808HG to him for new belt. AS you all know Maurice is probably one of the most capable electronics engineer ( and mechanical) on the forum (He in recent past designed one of Intels Chips ) with many detailed repairs of fine walkman including my RQ-S80 and S60 he used as example pictures for a post on belt replacement). When he rebelted the 808 with Sony orig. belt and played unit he said the sound was not what should be. Upon checking the PCB he found some capacitors that had readings slightly off from specification. He said he could replace some of the capacitors with better grade/performing caps that would increase amplifier output and sound quality. Time not use had started a few capacitors to lose proper function. Since many of the later model players had dismal amp output of 4 or 5mw ( the 808 is 5mw per channel) and can not drive headphones to any sort of louder volume. I agreed for him to do so. He was thrilled with the result and said that unit played noticeably louder and sounded better. He noted that from condition of player and internals it appeared to have for most part never been used. That would explain the extraordinary cosmetic condition. Not only is this a very rare Walkman in even far more rare near FLAWLESS ( one TINY nick on back top edge) BUT having been completely checked out and new belt and capacitors modified to make this great player a Extraordinary ONE OF A KIND. Chrome walkman due to finish are almost never flawless cosmetically.
You can be assured it will function far into the future with these new components unlike any other model you buy even if unused New In Box it will not be as this one is. I find NIB players often have electrical problems on pcb board and bad belt due to passage of time. Also NIB never used the belts have flat areas where they have sat for 10-20 years with pressure against guide wheels. Sometimes occasional use I believe is very good for the players and electronics inside vs. many years without any current flowing.

I have taken extensive pictures and a video on youtube to help buyers decide the value of this player. I have followed and keep a record of many models selling price on ebay to track values. In past 18 months this model selling price high was $497 USD WITH no box no new belt and not perfect. One sold recently from a seller I have purchased from who is generally reputable ( sent me a new in box unit rare green player but came in box marked for a silver player which I was most unhappy about as it affects value but 3 players themselves purchased all as described). I checked with him prior to end of sale and his 808 has a fair amount of small scratches all over surface , missing box, headphone adapter plug for std. HP, no owner manual/Headphone pamphlet/Guarantee Certificate, No RARE set of foam headphone pads ( RARE to find) and No new belt.
My EX-808HG includes ALL it came with :

ONLY MARK ON PLAYER TINY NICK BACK edge Was very hard to photograph its that small
PLUS unlike EVERY 808HG you will ever find that at best the belt will have been replaced mine also has a trusted and proven S2G member verify internal condition, performance and UPGRADE for increased amplifier power. Another one like this will NEVER exist in this condition and perfect performance for decades to come. I have taken player out few days ago and let it play for several hours daily checking the sound, changing direction etc to verify all is well as it should be it is. I used it briefly when I got it back from Maurice in July and only one other time during Christmas. Truly one of Sony’s best sounding players.

THIS IS PLAYER with ONE small box flap torn off. You can see in photo but have flap.
NOTATIONS ON CONDITION
1. Box is in GOOD condition one internal flap is torn off (have) box with some wear.
2. The one TINY nick it is very hard to see and it took me 7 photographs to get one that even showed the nick. Sadly this player in STRICTEST of ratings is not a perfect flawless condition player but as close as one can be that never was out of box. It IS mint and nearly new unused in every way. I defy someone to notice this nick without close examination. These chrome models are so hard to photograph and small marks are only noticeable from certain angles. But I must be honest and tell you this is not flawless but has one mark. Also when hold cover is over function buttons there are the ever so slightest of hairline mark in two lines always found on these sliding cover models where cover slides, could not get photograph to show they are so slight.
3. The ultra rare earbud foam pads are intact with one having slight edge deformed from storage in bag with owner manual. They have started to become sticky and are not in condition to be put on the earbuds but you have them. I have put them in jewelers gem folded paper case ( owned Jewelry store in past) that has special wax paper inside that should stop damage of foam sticking to plastic or anything else. These foam pads are BEYOND RARE TO FIND with this model.
4. The orig. battery has begun to slightly discolor on the covering. It will hold a charge but loses it quickly. It does have the orig. Sony plastic holder for gumstick battery.
5. The slip over cover for Walkman the Sony rubber emblem just to left of sony is cracked. Barely noticeable unless you bend material. ( time is certainly an enemy of rubber products even if unused ). Cover shows no signs of use on material.
6. The player does NOT like the 900 and especially 1400 mAh gumstick batteries. Sometimes when they are used ( instead of the 600 mAh what it came with) a Very low level sound is heard when vol. is all way down that is like a hum in morse code. I discovered this when it started to do this I know some walkmans start to do odd things when battery power is going low but not low enough to stop player or indicator light go off so I put on the Add on AA battery and sound went totally away. I took out the 1400 gumstick and put in 600 and it went away. As with nearly all sony’s when you switch on the megabass it adds a slight distortion or muddy up of sound. This happens minimally with this player but mostly only on the mid setting. In the off position its perfect no added sound or hum and on high not noticeable. I guess each player does have its own odd behaviors. Also noted that once I had a Maxell tape cause a intermittent chitter sound in background with this player. When I put in a That’s Suano (finest metal tape ever made) sound was perfect. Only someone who is a serious collector and also audiophile as I am would probably notice these things. Again because I know of them I share them with the potential buyer.
I certainly seem to notice that the cleanest best sound is had when the add on battery is used not the gumstick. I have found this true with most post 90's players of any model and most especially of the newer high end Panasonics they just hate running when the power of battery starts to drop even a little I have noticed they don’t want to start playing or sound becomes slightly dull ( speaking here of after 90's Panasonics). This player is just fine with a fully charged 600 mAh gumstick.
I have fully disclosed all that I know of this player. It has played flawlessly past 10 days. Good Luck Bidding to own this better than new impressive player.
