Rare Sony TCM-10, looking to ebay
michael.ma - 2011-07-26 02:50
Update, I have listed it ebay here with more pictures. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190565765274#ht_534wt_1204 I was digging up the old garage and I found one a TCM-10. I wanted to get an estimated value of this device so I can post it on ebay but I couldn't find any previous auctions. That's how I found this website. Strangely there hasn't been any ebay sales of the TCM-10 when I searched for completed auctions. Is this really rare? Anyone care to guess what this walkman costs and how much I should start the bidding at? Thank you very much.
As for the TCM-10, it quite an interesting Walkman. It expands in an unusual way (kinda transformer like) to reveal a pause switch. The battery is loaded from the inside. Here are some pictures.

Dave,
Thank you so much for looking into it. Maybe the two guys on that post you pointed me to might be interested in buying it. It looks like it is an absolute gem it would be nice to see it be in the hands of people who would take good care of it. Thanks again.

Hello Michael, certainly a fantastic find. On a scale of % would say this player is in the top 2-3% of walkmans ( probably about 30 are in this category since thousands of models were made over 25 years) as few surviving examples seem to exist. Both AgentOrange and myself have pristine examples although a much much higher value is seen for boxed with all accessories like AgentOrange has. Values are very hard to place on these as it always comes down to what someone will pay not what its past value was with economy and just luck of how many are looking at time you sell. If two people want it you can see possibly several hundred dollars for this (if working and 9/10 cosmetic condition). But it will need to be completely tested with ALL flaws cosmetically and mechanically explained openly. You must have very very clear up close pictures all sides and open to realize higher sell price. When someone pays higher price for a rare Walkman it must arrive with NO surprises in quality or workability from what was represented. Too many of us collectors have been burned by less than honest sellers.
I would post many pictures in the Walkman for sale section with subject SONY TCM-10 Extremely rare RECORDING model of WM-10. Leave it open for members to Private message you with offers ( you can if want post every few days best current offer but do NOT reveal members name in respect of privacy). If you dont get price you want try ebay but make sure you mark it for worldwide shipping and you should time end of auction so that people in Europe and USA can bid on it during normal waking hours not middle of night for some it reduces your chances of high price. Also put in description to get more search hits on your auction Sony WM-10,WM-20,WM-30 and WM-40 as these players all share the collapsible body design only the TCM-10 had recording ability. Although the WM-40 was a engineering marvel of overkill at time and better internals than other models with similar design. On ebay the rule is 95% of time the winning bid will be placed in the last 10 seconds of auction by someone who made no prior bids. Putting a reserve bid too high does reduce bidding but if rare enough and enough people during auction who see it and want to bid you may get price at end of auction.
Nice to see someone make effort to save these great machines and give people a chance who collect and use them as i do a chance to keep them alive. Good luck.
PS If you have any questions on the function of player or problems DOCP member on here is surely the KING of KNOWLEDGE on the collapsible models by Sony. His collection of all models and nearly every color is unsurpassed. Great upstanding member very helpful.
My post on my TCM-10 with comment by AgentOrange and his Ultimate collectable BOXED TCM-10. Thanks Eclipsedave for finding that topic.

Do we get a cut of the profits for our help?

@JohnEdward: Hey, no problem on passing on that link. I'm thankful that it was there for the passing. This forum is such an incredible resource! I'll say again that I LOVE these "transformers".
@Michael Ma: I just wondered if you ever got a chance to test out that unit. No hurry, as I'm only curious.

Hi John. Sorry for not replying sooner. Thank you for taking the time to write out your input and knowledge in the matter. It is very appreciated. I did test out the unit and I was bummed to find out that the unit does not function. The speakers seem to work as you can hear some white noise when the volume is turned up. I was say the outward appearance is pretty good. I wouldn't say it is in mint condition, but it looks like a well cared for but used piece of electronics. No noticeable scratches on the paint (except see below). Some minor scratches on the plastic, but nothing you can spot without looking for it.
When I put a new battery in and hit play, FF, or RR, the red LED light turns on and I hear the motor, but the turning knobs (that would turn the cassette tape) do not turn at all. In it's collapsed state, it sounds like it may be grinding on something. It pretty loud. That sound disappears when the case is expanded. The unit also shows signs of screws that have some scratches on it (someone servicing it). It is because I personally opened the unit just to take a peek to see if there was an obvious fix, and when I realized the delicate nature of it, I did not attempt much further than opening the screws on the outside. During this process though, I did notice that one of the screws is missing. When the case is expanded 2 screws are revealed. But one of the screws are not there. It is most likely that the screw many years ago came loose, then when the case was being closed, the screw must have been pulled off removing the black paint where the screw made contact. My guess is that, if the tape actually turned, the walkman would be usable as there are no obvious signs of damage elsewhere. Just my guess though.
I'll be posting it on ebay by the end of the week and start it at 99 cents with $5 S&H. I'll bubble wrap it and send it out in a book-saver shiping through USPS. Thanks everyone!

It has been posted! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190565765274#ht_534wt_1204
Thank you John for helping me getting all the right information on there.
Dave, thanks for taking the time to find the service manual. Hopefully it will be working again in the right hands. I had to start a little bit higher at $5 to cover the ebay fees.
